How long do you leave your dogs at home?

Thank you for the feedback, my dogs are not barkers and I have a few barkers in my neighborhood now and would never allow them to disturb my neighbors like that. I would definitely get a camera system to keep an eye and ear on them to make sure they aren’t causing any issues.

This house has fallen through but these are all great points for whatever setup I create at my future house. I do agree that a dog run would be more secure.

When you do find that house, you can still use a dog walker. We live on 2 acres and have a huge yard. Our dogs are not out during the day unless we are home.

Those days when no one is home for 8+ hours I have the walker come in around noon. They get walks, treats, and of course potty. I set up the walker schedule monthly as the days they are needed can change month to month.

That’s absolutely true and was my plan for the beginning transition period to a new house. I was trying to avoid it long term because $300-400 a month would be nice to free up for house improvements, travel etc.

Dogs will bark for all kinds of reasons, including to entertain themselves. Most people I know that have kennels do not want their dogs to have sight access to the street because they can learn to bark at anyone that drives by, walks by, etc. In a very rural area, maybe this is no big deal, but on a street with any traffic and/or neighbors, it might be a problem.

It’s a good point to think about though, as I get ready to build a kennel. Maybe I could install a camera or two to be able to check and see what they do during the day. Mine would not face the road, but one of mine would bark at deer if she saw them.

The dog I spoke of wasn’t neglected, it most likely suffered from separation anxiety from the sounds of the barking I did hear when I was walking by their house. Someone was always home at lunch to let the dog out for a bathroom break and short run around the yard and they hired someone to come in twice a day while they were away on vacation. They said they honestly didn’t know how much the dog was barking but I would think the dog’s voice would be noticeably different from the constant and loud barking. I was a bit surprised it took so long for someone to call in a complaint but if the immediate neighbours were working the same shifts as the owners I guess they wouldn’t hear it as often as others did.

I’ve met some rather consistent barkers that were anything but neglected.

Beside the house, I have a large locked dog run with a chain link top. The dogs have access to it through a dog door when I’m gone, which can occasionally be more than 12 hours.

They can go in and out as they want, and nothing else can get in through the dog door. I don’t have to worry about them dragging anything they shouldn’t into the house, or any potential dangers to them outside. It’s worked great for me for more than 20 years.
