How many of you created a show name that you are really proud of?

I like to name my horses after places, so my first was named after the town I got married in. My second horse is by Stakkatol so I named him Stockholm. But then I met a trainer this year with a horse ALSO by Stakkatol and he did me one better and spelled it Stokkholm. Live and learn.

One of these days I’m going to name a horse ā€œMy Retirement Account.ā€ I had a little horse whose show name was ā€œLock and Loadā€ barn name Zephyr. She was a little pistol so it fit her well. My current lease horse has the barn name ā€œErnieā€ which I’m not crazy about but his show and registered name is ā€œNatural Touchā€ which is kind of nice.

I was given a pony named ā€œChickenā€ because he was. We changed his name to Captain Courageous and he is.

Ego Stella Perpetuum which means I am a star forever. I named my Parco colt this for his show name. It’s for a dear friend of mine who passed this year tragically. He loved Latin and this was his phrase. He said that we are all stars forever.

I have ā€œPrincess Corn Flakesā€.

Long story short, I leased a mare from a friend to custom breed this filly last year. When the day came and she arrived, we were SURE it was going to be a colt. So, for the first few days of her life, my friend called her ā€œPrincessā€. Meanwhile, I had legitimate writer’s block on what I was going to call this FILLY. I had all the boy names lined up, ready to go, and could not for the life of me come up with anything I liked befitting a girl.

Well, one night while we were texting and I was drinking I finally said ā€œWhy not just call her Princess?ā€ … and my friend said, ā€œNo, my show horse is the Princess - we can’t have two… my husband says you should name her Corn Flakes.ā€ Because I was half drunk, the thought of ā€œPrincess Corn Flakesā€ made me start crying in laughter. Part of it was just the left field recommendation of Corn Flakes, but a bigger part was that my friend freaked out and was like, ā€œYou CANNOT call her that.ā€ (This filly is by a multiple World Champion and out of an NSBA World Champion, so we expect great things from her.)

Me being me - I kind of continued with the PCF train just because it made me laugh. She called her some gross barn name I don’t even remember; I told her I hated it and she continued to call her that regardless of me asking her not to, which further upset me especially since she was promoting this filly on social media with that name.

Then, I found out she registered my filly with a name I hadn’t seen or approved of since she had the paperwork. We’ve since ceased being friends for a number of reasons, that one not excluded.

I sent in the paperwork recently to have it officially changed to ā€œPrincess Corn Flakesā€. Yes, fancy halter plate and all.

Certainly familiar with your guy, since I follow your blog. I love that name as well.

Ha! It’s funny how even when we have a list ready, some horses name themselves through their behavior or appearance. Most of my horses have had ā€œnamesā€ but also ā€œthings I call themā€, which are not overlapping. And oftentimes, the ā€œthings I call themā€ I use more than the names.

Case in point, I leased a horse at one point with a very fancy European name (think, like, Fernando). I called him Goober. Hahha.

I would’ve called her Sailor’s Delight (red sky at night because that’s what came to mind when I saw her. Lovely BTW.)

chestnut gelding – Right On Red (double meaning, as in Right on, Red!"
dark bay/brown gelding – Bonfire Night (barn name Guy)

A girl I knew in high school got an ottb one Christmas and said she was going to show him as ā€œSt. Nick’s Best Giftā€ (I don’t know that she ever did). I always thought that was really cute.

My first horse, Leroy, didn’t have a show name, so I got to come up with it. I was thinking I’d do Big’n’Rich after their song ā€˜Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy’, but when I told my then high school friends his name, they said: ā€œOh, like Special Agent Gibbs?ā€ So eventually, I just said exactly like that.

I was looking for an OTTB project gelding a few years ago. I was planning to name the horse after a character in a cartoon: Racer-X ( ex-race car driver). Thought that would be perfect for an ex-race horse. I would show him as Racer-X with Rex as a barn name!

I ended up falling in love with an Irish Sporthorse mare. Since she,s a black bay with Irish and English blood, I called her Tea Time.

I am glad this story has a happy ending, and bonus points for the most unique name!

Many many years ago we got a pony that had been sent to slaughter and someone there thought she was too nice and contacted a dealer she knew. It didn’t take us long to figure out why she was there–what a bugger she was! She was such a brat I think my parents were thinking of shipping her back  One of the students wanted to take her on as a project, so they said ā€œpony, Karen is your last chanceā€ It stuck and her show name became ā€œLast Chanceā€. We had her for over 30 years and she taught a lot of children to ride (including my daughter).

A local breeder was asking for name suggestions for a baby with lots of chrome. I suggested Chandler Bling.

I’ve come up with a few that make me grin. POA pony who was adorably sassy was showed was Spot of trouble. Paint pony with barn name Oreo was showed as milk’s favourite cookie. And an OTTB with the barn name Fraiser showed as I’m listening (if anyone remembers that 90’s tv show).

Another horse who was already on the truck for slaughter but the buyer got her taken off: show name Near Miss, barn name Missy.

I bred my mare in hopes of creating a successor to our elderly eventing schoolmaster. His name was On Your Mark aka Mark, the resulting filly is named Remarkable. She is now 7 years old and carting her riders around from crossrails (me) novice (my daughter) and just moved up to training with our trainer. She is well on her way to being a schoolmaster herself and filling his shoes better than I could ever have dreamed of which is truly Remarkable.

I forgot one…I had a horse delivered, he came on 23rd December, and it just seemed to fall into my brain, he would show as The Knight Before Christmas.

It is still a bloody good name, and where my screen name here came from. Sadly never showed him, after he put me in the hospital for a month, he was sold…
