Loading/unloading, lunging/long reining, vet visits, catching/turning out new horses.

During the cold winter months, I keep my helmet on all the time from the moment I get to the barn to tacking up, riding, and untacking. During the summer months, after a ride I take it off and don’t always put it back on when untacking. I try to be more conscience about keeping it on when untacking or anytime I’m with them.

It depends on how many things I’m carrying. I usually put it on before tacking up so my hands are free, and take it off at some point during untacking. If it’s the summer, it comes off as soon as the horse is secured for untacking. In the winter it might go on as soon as I get to the barn and stay on until I’m in the car to come home.

I wear gloves and a helmet to ride and lunge.

According to The Doctors on TV you should wear a helmet whenever you go off the ground eg going up a ladder.
