Up-To-Date Kanine ACEPROMAZINE info
To reiterate what every other forum poster has contributed, you MUST consult with your vet, and Acepromazine should only be administered and dispensed by a licensed veterinarian! HOWEVER, that being said, to answer the mg per lbs question, the information of 0.25mg up to 1.0mg per lbs. is correct.
Every Vet I have ever dealt with being a large Lab family, has ALWAYS administered only the minimum mg per lbs with our dogs, and has only given them Ace once they were 12 months old. (I do not know or have information as to minimum age requirements). Our largest Lab, a chocolate is ‘travel sensitive’, (bouncing off the walls with excitement inside a child-packed SUV on long road trips during the Summer months) began receiving Ace by his Vet around the age of 14 months, at 119 lbs. The first dose was 25mg. When that did not work, my Vet instructed me to go to 1 and 1/2 25 mg tabs (oral), next to two, and once it was all said and done with, ‘Scout’s’ prescribed dosage was 3 to 4, 25mg tablets orally (75mg to 100mg) 1 to 2 hours before travel as the way he metabolizes the meds is different than his younger brother, a black lab who at 117lbs. Is on 25mg to 50 mg max as prescribed by the vet. These are large, and active dogs and their Rx as well as the time it takes to digest and work itself out of their systems will obviously be different than a 20 lbs Corgi. We just happen to have a large family of labs and kids (kids do not get the Ace, but we are still trying to convince their Dr. it would be a great idea on trips as well… (KIDDING…). It is not illegal or unethical to discuss RX dosage, administration etc. AS LONG AS IT IS MADE CLEAR, that ONLY a Vet can do so, AND AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT GIVING INSTRUCTIONS ON WHAT SOMEONE ELSE SHOULD DO WITH THEIR ANIULAM in regards to ANY prescription medication, or at least that is accurate for the state of North Carolina… I can tell you have to consult with a vet, a licensed vet has to prescribe, administer and dispense, I can quote the manufacturer’s website information ( my Dog’s RX info on tablets can be found here and is where the written data for mg per lbs. comes from: http://www.bi-vetmedica.com/main/pet/promace.html ) and I can tell you all day long what my vet prescribed, how much if it he prescribed, when, what, where, etc. but I may NOT suggest, hint, recommend or otherwise dictate what you should or should not do for your animal outside of specifying you must contact a licensed veterinarian.
I just wanted to give a few of you information on what a couple of my dogs take (in regards to Ace) when needed because there are a few forum users who legitimately had some health concerns when it came to the 0.25 per lbs. specification and I wanted to let you know I DO have a dig who only takes Ace once or twice a year and who does take 1mg per pound without issue. and likewise I have a lab from the same family (same Mom, different Dads) who takes no more than 0.25mg per lbs. and we have two in between as well. All over 100 lbs. Each on a different dose of Ace ranging from 0.25mg per lbs. up to Scout who is the 1.0mg per lbs puppers Yes… They are VERY large Labs… Our ‘babies’… Again, only a licensed Vet can give you factual and accurate information, prescribe, administrate, dispense, etc. prescription mediations to your animals, and personally, I ALWAYS also discuss ANY Over The Counter meds vitamins or remedied BEFORE giving to my animals, WITH my Vet. I love my animals like they were my kids, and they are a huge part of our family, all of them and I would NEVER want to do anything to jeopardize their health or for that matter the health of ANY animal. Please contact your vet, ALWAYS before giving ANY meds to your animal, and NEVER give your animal prescription drugs, WITHOUT a prescription and vet supervision!
