How much to charge your trainer to use your trailer?

Please tell me your trainer was not the one who came up with this ‘wonderful’ idea?! If so, she is taking you for a ride!!

With that said, it CAN work…where I ride there are a couple ‘communal’ trailers that owners don’t mind others using as long as they cover gas etc. This is just for local shows (e.g. within 15 minutes).

…and money is a little tight for her I’m sure as she is adding more stalls to the barn and putting up arena lights for me so I can ride at night[/QUOTE]

She is adding stalls and putting up lights because they benefit her, not you. You are secondary to improvements in the property. It’s a business, she’s not your “bud”…do not lend your trailer for all the reasons people have responded.

Who was at fault when she totaled her truck? (And does the mean you will be loaning your truck as well?)

I wouldn’t touch this arrangement with a 10-foot pole.

The farm that I work for occasionally has me use my own trailer for them (with me driving it). They have several trailers but sometimes we haul a lot of horses to a big show like Devon. We do have it worked out through our insurances and I am paid a per mile rate for it.
That said I am not sure I’d let someone else drive my truck and trailer. Even my DH very rarely gets to drive it. I’d make sure that when you figure out the compensation you are to receive that you factor in insurance, wear and tear, etc. Is she going to be using your truck too?

Not sure, but you may also need a business license because you are operating a trailer leasing business. And don’t forget the taxes you will need to pay on your new source of income.

I am in total agreement that this is a horrific idea that is only going to lead to headaches for you and the possibility of a new thread in a couple months for us,possibly titled “My trainer wrecked my trailer and will not pay!!!”

Please take the advice that has been given to you by knowledgeable people

Me neither.

It’s scary enough just hauling someone’s horse (I bring people to local events but do not get reimbursed for more than half the gas). Trailering is dangerous, fraught with liability, and when something goes wrong, it generally goes very wrong.

Don’t do it. There’s no upside for you.
