Oh no! Sorry but I was only looking for horses who had competed successfully at Novice up to Training and who looked like they would work for an amateur at those levels, this is what I came up with in about half a hour.
Having done that search for myself and with others in Area 2, I would say that the stuff listed as a Novice or Training packer at $5-10k is usually either not as advertised or had some problems. I found them at maybe $12-15 for reasonably priced and/or older and/or smaller horses up to $30-40k and up for really nice horses or those being sold by delusional people. It’s amazing how many “packers” are not really that IME. Also it depends on the barn. BNT sells for more than backyard barn.
I found lame horses to be oddly priced at a premium.

ditto the above. You will find many horses advertised as fitting your description but will find few horses that live up to that description. I am often amazed at the stories I hear from those horse shopping.
shew. Thanks subk
I have a nice guy who can fit all ammy needs or whoop some butt for a young rider.
all the characteristics you describe.
sweet sweet heart on the ground. Super lovey dovey.
only 5 so he’s still cute and silly baby like
Won his first novice by 4 points. Came in 1st in his 2nd novice.
Will run 4 trainings and then bump up to prelim (sadly I have to do 4 Trainings for QRs)
*allergic to rails and has auto change
This boy will bring it on the 3rd day no matter how tired he might be. He tries his heart out.
He’s def priced at more than 25K.
: )

You may want to check your qualification requirements. I would think you only need one to reinstate your old qualifications----since you have run more trainings in the past, you just need one within 12 months. At least that was the old rule. Of course you may want to run more Trainings.

I’ll look into it.
But my last prelim was in 2008.
Last Training was 2010.
I feel like an old fart. lol

Doesn’t matter. For qualification purposes, I’m pretty sure you would just need one Training (since you already have 4 in the past, you just need one within 12 months). You may want to do more than one though.

I would say 20k and up, if you want a fancy moving, easy to ride, attractive, sound horse. If you are willing to be forgiving for any of the above, you can go much less.
When I say this price range, I am talking about the sort of horse that can go out and win consistently in Area II events…[/QUOTE]
What she said…for less $$ you might get less fancy older needing maintenance. Also location plays big factor…
Well here is one who sold in the PNW for $12,000 so at least you know what they are worth in this area. Nice solid 16H, 5 year old TB mare going novice.
Could a 5 year old horse going Beginner Novice be considered a packer?
It depends on the horse. I have known a couple of 5 year olds that absolutely were packers at the BN level (but probably not above that at that point in their careers). One was a Morgan and the other a WB/QH cross.

The rules say
APPENDIX 3 - PARTICIPATION IN HORSE TRIALS
…
In all cases, at least one Qualifying Result must be obtained in the twelve month period prior to the competition.
…
2.2.4 PRELIMINARY § - Open to competitors from the beginning of the calendar year of their 14th birthday, on horses five years of age or older. The competitor must have obtained an NQR at four Horse Trials at the Training Level or higher.
“Competitor” = rider.
A long as you have 4 total at T or above, only one of them needs to be in the last 12 months, for rules purposes.
(Of course, if they were so long ago they were not keeping the records below Prelim, then you might need to present some sort of proof, but the dates you quote are well into the record keeping era.)
That being said, from a training perspective, you probably SHOULD do more than one Training on THIS horse before moving up to Prelim. But the rules do not REQUIRE it.
