How often do you float your horse's teeth?

Checked annually, float as required. Most annually but sometimes they go two cycles.

G.

I have my vet do them only when it is needed.

He checks them when he is out and we go from there. One mare we have had for 9 years and she has never been floated. I’ve had my mare 14 of her 15 years and she has been done twice.

Checked every 6 months, work as needed.

All horses of a variety of ages from 2-23 checked every 6 months and done as needed. Most done annually, a few done every 6 months if they have an exceptionally poor mouth and some broodmares done only every 2-3 years. These are all quarter horses bred for reining and cutting…a large range from foals to older thriving broodmares.
I use a dentist who uses a combination of hand tools and power float. Have been very happy with her for years.

Mine get checked twice a year at vaccination visits. One doesn’t have any specific dental issues but when she’s in work (carrying a bit) she is happiest having them floated annually. Usually hand tools are satisfactory in her case. The other has a “textbook mouth” according to at least 4 different vets-- she has not had hers done in probably 3 years… Maybe longer if I look back in records. I will probably have the dentist out in the spring just in case, as my local vet does not specialize in teeth.

Annually, just had mine done a few days ago. Generally I haul in to the vet and usually request their dentist but she wasn’t available so had the vet take care of it.

Mine usually are done every 9 months. However, my current dressage horse tells me every 5-6 months that she NEEDS her teeth done, so the rotation now is a little quicker. Her teeth are never terrible, but she’s sensitive and when she gets a few edges, she gets funny about the bit and contact. I’ve now had 2 cycles where floating cleared that right up.

same. Check twice a year and float as needed. My old retiree usually goes 12-18 months. My younger mare is pretty routine every year.

Low-level jumper rider here, both cases are OTTB geldings doing the 1.0m jumpers being power floated by the same vet.

Horse 1) 11 year old gelding, annually. Had him from when he was 6, always on same schedule.
Horse 2) 14 year old gelding, checked every 6 mons, usually only done annually. Ideally he should probably be on a 9 mons schedule. Has needed to be checked every 6 mons since owner got him at 6-7 (I lease him).

I do once a year (although checked every 6 months) by my vet, under sedation, with an electric floater. Years and states ago, manually. All of my horses were done once a year, and all of them needed it at one year. My current vet is great at explaining the dentition and encouraging me to see and feel why she makes the decisions she makes.
