I went out for the first time at 48, under the masterful guidance of Hunter’s Rest as both teacher and Third Field Master…and my face hurt from smiling when it was all over. I returned again 6 months later, and I’m making my plans to go back this fall.
I had ridden as a teen, but only once a week lessons on school horses, and returned to riding in my 40s. I had never taken a jump of any size until 2 years ago. Riding improvements come more slowly at this age, due to the impediments of work, fear and breakability…but they still come.
I’m not prepared to join the local hunt just yet…I still don’t own a trailer, and I’m concerned that my pony may be a little too enthusiastic in the field for my riding abilities…but I haven’t given up, and I’m on a two year plan to try & become a good enough rider to join up.
I encourage you to make the road trip to VA to Hunter’s Rest and come out with us. It’s an experience you absolutely will not forget, but be prepared to spend the rest of your riding life trying to find ways to hunt!

Hey Centaurian,
When is the baby due? Sounds like your foal may have hit the ground already.
I hope you get to hunt this season.:)[/QUOTE]
Not due till October… but we know its a colt! LOL
I guess for horse people, part of “nesting” is not just getting a crib and painting the nursery, but also pony shopping
I had always wanted to hunt, but didn’t know the right people to ask…So i believe my first hunt was when I was 32, that was 8 years ago.
Have been hunting for 2 years now (between Eventing) and started at 49. Love it and can’t wait for the fall season to begin!
Went once at 13 or 14. Never again until this spring, at age 49, on a wonderful COTH hunt at Hunter’s Rest. Good lord willing and the old bod and pocket book hold out, I hope to really be able to get into it in the next couple of years.
Heyyy-
I have a fat little TWH pinto pony.
She is the one that stands on the back deck and pushes the back door open. After she knocks, of course.
So, guess I"m off to a good start? She does not gait as far as I can tell. Nice little canter, too.
I have two more in the wings-Clevie/TB and Perch/CB/X.
I’m AARP age. :eek::yes:
It is really bad when one looks at property mainly because it is close to a hunt, and looks at house plans to determine if the chosen one is suitable for ten dogs…
Just sayin’ .
As DH had decided: small house, big barn.
Hmmm…I started hunting between conception and there was no more room to let out my Mother’s drop-front button breeches…
jmho!
Bet I could name you at least a dozen kids around here that started hunting in utero!!! And even more folks that started over 50…There ARE no age limitations; only physical or mental ones…IMHO!!
If you think you can’t; you can’t.
If you think you can; you can!!
I started hunting in utero, and my son who started in utero should be hitting the leadline this season since he is almost out of diapers. Tally Ho…
I want to go hunting so bad!!! Of course I have everything I need BUT the trailer. Being in college, that’s not going to be possible:( Sad because we live about 30 minutes from two hunts that I have heard really good things about… do it if you can! It looks so much fun!
I was 15 the first time I got to hunt. My teacher was field master for our local hunt, and she would take students as a reward when we worked hard and improved in our lessons.
By the time we hacked 30 feet from the meet, I was hooked for life. 40 years later, I’m more addicted than ever.
If you love riding through the woods with great folks, and love seeing happy dogs doing what they were born to do, you need to go hunting.
I started dreaming of hunting in 1997 and went on my first hunt in 2001. It’s incredibly addicting!!
English cowgirl,
I sent you a pm.
old enough to vote!

I was 8
Grew up hunting with Pohick Valley Hunt in Fairfax Co, VA in the 80’s. Also hunted with Bull Run Hunt when their primary fixture was in Prince William County.
Here’s a pic of me on my pony and my mom on her big mare circa '82 or '83: http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/162787_174626025899738_100000570246080_501087_7756491_n.jpg
A D-3 in Pony Club I was about 12. It was a drag hunt in Northern California on a misty morning. We were galloping along with the hilltoppers and a pair of camels appeared next to us, trotting calmly alongside. A large portion of the horses spooked, never having seen something like that. It was great - Pony Club is the best.
