How separate pet dishes from people dishes?

Sponges squick me out. Husband loves sponges. I grew up in a dishrag house.

Dog bowls go in dishwasher, but not very often.

Dog toys also go in dishwasher.

Dogs do not lick plates unless boys leave plates where plates shouldn’t be because dogs end up with VBG (very bad gas) or worse still VBT (very bad trots) when human food is consumed. Ask me how I know (says the mom of two dogs with delicate digestive systems).

Everyone has their own food dishes, but they all also lick dishes or will get special treats on my dishes (I live in an 800sq ft house with a kitchen with crappy storage…I am NOT wasting space on extra animal dishes!). I actually have to referee plate licking at times so everyone can get some! Same brush (ew, sponges are gross!) for everything. And I, too, have been known to eat something someone else has rejected (within reason, of course!). Stella the dog is very picky and will often lick something then say never mind. If it’s a bite of a cookie, hell if I’m going to let that bite go to waste!

I use a separate sponge scrubber. Actually, I have bought a pack of silicone sponge dish scrubbers so I can use them for different washing, for example, dishes for my family and pets

I find it interesting what some people find to worry about.

I live alone with one dog. I frequently eat dinner on the couch with the dog beside me. A bite for me, a morsel for him. I have been known to feed him right off my fork. He only cleans the plate if there isn’t a lot of grease left behind. I’ll usually wipe 3/4 of the plate with a paper towel and let him lick the rest. Why not?

His bowls are washed with my dishes, after every use.

This is an amusing thread.

Zombie thread. 2014.

Is it weird I see these zombie threads, not knowing and think “ah finally a good thread topic”.
Maybe I recognize them subconsciously.
Then start reading and think, “wow it’s nice to hear from that poster again” and then sadly finally see the dates.
I miss a lot of posters :frowning:

My cats get their wet food on paper plates. So much easier to just toss. Their dry food and water bowls go through the dishwasher once a week in a separate load…not because I’m a germophobe but because they fill the dishwasher.

Polo has a few of my old bowls, gets my plate every night and sometimes a pan.

Brushes, bits, stirrups and pads used to run in their own cycle but that was more about hiding that fact from my X done, over and empty dishwasher before dinner dishes got loaded

Yup, same here

Oh heck no, my dogs do not get to lick my plates or eat off of my silverware. One of mine is allergic to the world so they just never get people food regardless… I also don’t share straws with people (even friends or SO). It is a weird thing I’ve got - not a germaphobe, but I don’t like sharing drinks or utensils, but double dip away I don’t care about that one. I also don’t like when my dogs lick my face… I know some people are fine with that, but I just don’t like it. I don’t care of I use the same sponge on pet vs my dishes because the sponge cleans it all… and I throw all the bowls in the DW together because it cleans them.

I know it’s old but it was funny to read some of these comments before I realized the date.

I am the furthest thing from a germaphobe. I wash my animal dishes in the same dishwasher we use, I use our utensils, and sometimes in the same sink with soap and hot water…sometimes same sponge. I’m incredibly healthy. And I don’t think twice about it. Bigger fish to fry.

Yes, also all the barn cat dishes go in dishwasher. Any bowl, pan, crockpot, etc gets locked and put in dishwasher. Also bits and toys. There’s a sanitize cycle on most dishwashers…
