My horse is on a strict diet and cannot have anything with sugar due to being PPID/IR. Even an apple or carrot may tip him over the edge. I use peanuts in the shell for treats (in moderation) and put his Prascend pill inside the shell and he eats it right up. When I introduced him to the peanuts I put a small amount in his beet pulp mix so he could get used to the taste and now he likes them as treats.
The pill is tiny. Most horses will eat it in their feed and not think twice about it.
We are supposed to be the smart ones, right?
Oh, yes, horses have a way to humble us.
Eh, read the Cushings threads and you’ll see that a lot of horses won’t eat it in their feed. If they will - that’s awesome. My pony will fling his entire bucket if the pill is in there.
Does anyone know if there is a certain time of day to give this medicine? Only in the morning? at night? does it matter?
I dissolve the pill in water and squirt it onto his feed. All gone.
Doesn’t matter.
A friend uses jelly beans. Mine is currently getting his mixed with peppermint powder and apple sauce with cinniman. Sometimes I gave to hand feed it.
It’s been a while since I started my old guy on it, but don’t you want to slowly increase the dose? Seems to me that was recommended. Start w a 1/4 tab and work up? Seems like that was the recommendation.
Just mentioning another way to feed it – I feed soaked grain (usually TC Senior) in nosebags. Toss the prascend tablet in; it semi dissolves into the feed. Done! The nosebag stops them from spilling it etc so you know they’ve actually eaten it. I have 4 Cushings horses on my farm right now, and this method works for them all.
I used a cat pill gun with the silicone tip. I was able to put the pill back far enough on his tongue that he swallowed it and my fingers were safe.
Gelding (25 yrs) was not sweating so vet suggested daily dose of Guiness dark beer (4 oz) during summer, It worked great so carried this over to get him to tolerate his Prascend pill. We now grind the pill to a powder and dissolve it in a half ounce of hot water and add it to the 4 oz of beer and sprinkle it over his hay in his stall. He always eats it all.
This cracked me up! Thank you!!! The only tip I can add is that I have one I feed Prascend to using a very small handful of black oil sunflower seeds. He can find that tiny pink pill in anything else. Maybe the crunch of the shell hides the crunch of the pill? The moistness of carrots and apples makes me wonder if they can smell it more easily. I may try the peanuts! Thanks.
For those horses who become inappetent, APF from Auburn Labs is supposed to be a game changer. I have no personal experience, but I have a pal who has had great luck w it.
I put in on top of his feed (which has soaked beet pulp mixed into it) and he eats it!! Lucky me!!
Same here. I used to have the powder, but now the pill. In both cases I just mix it in with her Pro-Elite Senior (and rice bran oil), and she eats without complaint.
