How to keep Evil Burrito II from pulling up stall mats?

My new farm already had a very nice 4 stall Barnmaster on it… nothing else, no water, no house, no nothing, just this $$$ barn conplete with concrete, mats, etc. So I don’t want them pulled up after I move this summer

I think Evil Burritos should get to do whatever they want

(Or you could get the mat clips and ruin his fun)

Simkie (I can’t quote) - our original method might work for what you need. We just built a box around the overhang area using pressure treated wood attached to the posts of the overhang. I think we used 2x6s, set on edge, then filled with the rock we used as a base for the mats, with mats on top. Mats were cut to fit, so just like laying them in a stall, and they don’t move at all under normal conditions. Works great for all of my other horses except the one mat destroyer!

For the destructive one, my SO pulled up the mats (well…horse pulled some, SO got the rest) and ran boards across in the rock where the edges of the mats would be. I think he used 2x6s again, but this time laying flat, and attached at the ends to the outer box boards using some sort of corner brackets. Lay mats back down and use lag bolts to attach to the boards.

A bit of a pain to do, but better than buying mats and filling holes!

Your current mats just lay side by side? Don’t they make mats that interlock? It might be you need those in your new barn and do like others have said and leave a mini mat for the burrito to play with:D

At my boarding barn, no they don’t interlock, and neither do they at my barn but they fit better. At my boarding barn, they didn’t fit perfect and there was a hole in the middle. The mats were 5x7, and they laid them around and left a 1x1 hole with no mat in the middle, and I think the edges got exposed and made it too tempting? But now that he has started, he grabs from the wall area under the hay net and pulls up/back and toward the center of the stall.

And yes, they have lots of toys. Stall balls, the aforementioned rubber feed pan, various other horse toys that are in bits and pieces all over…

In case you missed the feed pan video: https://youtu.be/VCT_ZLd_r8M

LOL. He’s way more destructive than my little burrito, Samson.
I agree. He needs something to play with. Either another burrito, or maybe an extra stall mat! LOL. Sorry, but it’s just too funny. Maybe he’s looking for hay scraps under there.

There are DOS BURRITOS. I vowed no more mouths to feed for the time being.

TRES BURRITOS!!! Come on, you know you want another!

I do but no    Not for a while at least, not until construction is done.

OP, You do realize that you could charge money for seats to watch the 2 burritos play don’t you.:lol:

Believe me, if I lived closer, I’d gladly come over take a ring side seat!

Hey if anyone wants to come watch, they are welcome! Here’s the guest room, watch that dog - he bites, and here’s where the treats are for the burritos

I’m not kidding but if I came to watch I’d have to bring my dog and he’s an old geezer (15) that whines/whezzes and drives me crazy just driving 2 miles to a local trail for a walk! Besides you have more rain/yr than we usually get in the Rottenchester, NY area.

Fortunately I can look out my kitchen window and watch 2 of my neighbor’s horses play ‘grab your face and rear up’. An OTTB and a draft/quarter cross that both just turned 7.

My more likely “next purchase” is going to be another horse, because my WB loves to play and can be bullyish with my 20 yo retiree, who is not and never was a player. But still… nothing until all my house stuff is done and all property improvements are complete. Late summer before I can even think on those things!

Seems to me it would easier to just get rid of the mats and fill in any holes that get dug from time to time. I’ve done it not that difficult and is less work.

In Burritos stall, take the regular mats out. You’ll have a million other places to use them, I promise. Purchase and replace with interlocking, NEATLY cut to fit like a glove. It will be like wall to wall carpeting that they cannot displace, I promise. I would NEVER use regular mats again (except as shared, for other/human uses in feed area, etc)
