How to make a neck rope

Shady34, this is what you wrote:

If I would break a new horse no way would I just use a halter. I have a big 1 inch neck rope, super strong clasp and this is what I use the first time. I know beyond a doubt that the horse will not get away unless what I tie to breaks. A good truck inner tube and a good tree also make good tying points.
Anyway glad it helped some.
I feel if you have good information, post it, don’t wait for someone to run into a problem and ask. Share information.

Then you clarified when I cried foul on “a big 1 inch neck rope, super strong clasp and this is what I use the first time”

After you told AT to wax cars and pointed out she’s 29. I’m 37. Have at it.

So, in sum, Shaddowy27, Be careful of the standard you hold others to. You might notice hot feet and fanny soon thereafter.

Oh no, believe me, I agree with you! It was the farrier’s idea to do it this way and I protested but he swore he’d done it a hundred times and it would cause no harm. What we did was wrap the rope around the post about 6 times (and she weighed maybe 400 lbs). That way if it got downright ugly and dangerous, you just let the rope go and she would unwind it. He said she’d fight for 5 minutes and then she’d quit. And that’s what she did. I was a bit younger at that time and a little intimidated by this guy so I gave in. If I were doing it on my own, I definitely would use the intertube only after training sessions of learning to give to pressure and come forward.

We have raised a lot of babies at our farm and we always wrapped the rope around a post and held it so we could give a little when they pulled. Then you talk to them, add a little pressure, and encourage them to come forward. They come forward, you give a pet and a treat, and within a few times they learn. Ours always tied with no problems.

This filly desperately needed a foot trim because I pulled her out of a weanling lot at 10 months and she wasn’t halter broke or anything. She had a severe wry foot (rotated hoof capsule). The farrier came out a few days after I got her home because the foot needed to be fixed now rather than later. If she was born on our farm, things would have been different.
