Howling Dogs?? UPDATE:A HOWLER IS BORN!

My dogs howl every night around 10 pm for some reason, but they won’t do it if people are around. I have watched them out of my apartment window, but I have yet to have them do it in front of me and I have no clue what makes them do it.

They are 2 Australian Shepherds and 1 Australian Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog cross.

I had a Borzoi that howled. My Mother described it as sounding like “souls crying out from the dead”, that was pretty accurate. It was the most mournful noise! He would do it when he wanted in, he would find the window that he could see you through and go to town!

My Boxer doesn’t howl but makes the funniest noises, mostly related to play or when he wants you to think he could die of hunger at that very moment!

I loved my howling GSD and I miss him now, living in town and all :frowning:

We have 3 dogs- cairn/scotty mix, a shepherd/collie mix(we think), and a mini aussie. All three will howl if you sing to them(howl). The cairn mix has a very high pitched howl, the shepherd mix is fairly low and the aussie is in between in pitch. The aussie will occasionally howl if she wants out of her crate in the morning.

Boy, I miss that! 5 dogs, and all I get is RAHRAHs, WOOOFs, and whining in various keys :frowning:

Lovey1121, they are very funny. All 3 heads straight up in the air howling. I can try to tape it for you if you would like…hehe.

Ha! I have video! These are my 6 month old Scottish Deerhound puppies - littermates Ben (blue collar) and Belle (red collar).

It’s sort of in-between howling & talking, and involves a lot of teeth-clanking. They are hysterically funny - to me, anyway! : -)))

I have a Bloodhound who makes those same kind of noises every time you touch her belly.

She only recently started howling at sirens (as long as she thinks you aren’t watcing.) I thought for the first 8 months of her life that she didn’t have a voice, as she never barked or howled. Since she has found her voice though, she is constantly barking at the neighbors and my blue heeler.

Mao, my guys make the same noises when playing on the floor like that- lots of ARARARAR and squeaks and sneezing-the biggest dog makes the highest pitched sounds when playing w/the smallest dog.

Now if only they would howl! AAARRROOOOH…WOOOOWOOO!!!

Five, count 'em five Jacks ‘belonging’ to my BF. One night we and the 5 dogs were singing at the top of our lungs. She told me they sing (howl) often :lol::lol::lol:

I’ve got an Aussie/hound dog cross, a JRT, and a Cocker Spaniel who love to sing. They usually do it when I leave to go walking with a friend. We can hear them start up when we get to the corner.

The other day, we were walking in the subdivision next door, about a half-mile away, and we could hear them from there! A friend who lives in the next block from my house called me to say she knew exactly when I left the house, because she heard the chorus.

I thought they howled only when I left them, but the other night I was in the house and they were on the back porch singing away!

They do a combination of long howls with some yipping, all seeming like they are trying to outdo each other. Three-part harmony!

And normally, they are very quiet dogs (yes, even they JRT - he rarely barks!).

my lab/shep cross has barked 3 times in the almost 2 years that we have had him.
not a peep if the fire horn goes off, or if the coyotes howl or if the neighbor dogs are trying to get the doggy choir going. he is a quiet boy. on the other hand, my friend had a dog that would sing. soo much so, that he has been on music recordings (she’s a musician and also worked at a famous recording studio where the bands would live on the premises). once the bands found out that riley could ‘sing’, he was requested quite regularly.

I have a Rhodie that talks just like those deerhounds. I haven’t seen him do it to other dogs but he will to ppl. I should see if I can get him to Howl

I could get my sister’s Dobie mix to howl all the time. I LOVED it:D I still miss my Sadie!
