Human Food for Horses

My last horse was such a weirdo when it came to treats. He was very picky about what he wanted. He didn’t like apples, carrots were fine, but I kept a stash of graham crackers for him in my trunk that he absolutely loved. His very favorite though was french fries.

I was grazing him after cross country at one of our events while we waited for the results to finalize and my mom bought me your fare standard chicken tenders and french fries for lunch from the vendor. He started going nuts trying to get some from me, so I let him try a french fry, thinking he would spit it out. Nope. Started going even crazier trying to get more! My mom had to take him so I could eat in peace. Such a little weirdo.

My horse loves Angry Orchard Hard Apple Cider. He gets a couple bottles on his birthday each year. He likes most treats except anything sour or from the citrus family. He gets his Equioxx pill in Sprouts Apple Cinnamon Newtons. I split the Newton into three pieces each when I make his food bags for the week. They are much cheaper than German Horse Muffins.

My jumper will eat and drink anything. I had to make the kids stop experimenting with different junk foods because he will eat ANYTHING. His faves are bananas, which are fine, but he loves cheese snack crackers, lattes, any kind of beer, and cider. He also once drank an entire bottle of homemade lemon water.

When I was a kid I used to bring my lunch to the barn with me, generally a PB&J and a grape soda. My first junior hunter used to share those with me. My second junior hunter loved chocolate. He really enjoyed Whatchamacallit bars, in particular. I ran into him with his groom at a show shortly after we sold him to an older ammy, and the groom was feeding him Reeses Pieces, which made me very happy. I told her about the Whatchamacallit bars, so she would have a backup snack.

My horses always loved Fruit Loops! Of course, they only got a small handful every once in awhile.

Grapes, peanuts, ginger snaps, oatmeal cookies

He won’t touch a squash though. Watermelon must be the perfect ripeness

The horse my mom had when we were kids LOVED beer. If he saw a beer bottle sitting anywhere it was fair game. It was short bottles back then but he would pick it up and manage to drink from the bottle.

I knew a horse many years ago who would do the same thing with a Coke bottle.
