Hunter Paces... (and links for ones to go to!!!) - *UPDATE*

Anyone else going to Yadkin Valley Hounds (Advance, NC) on October 19?
http://www.yadkinvalleyhounds.com/
We have a good group going, but let me know if any CoTHers will be there!

Might go to Moore Cty Hounds pace on Nov 9th too: http://www.thepilot.com/stories/20080921/sports/hoofbeats/20080921Calendar.html

We’ll see how the YVH ride goes first

Green Mountain Hounds fall pace is Saturday October 4th! Come out and see our hunt country in full fall foliage…

Well. Looks like I’m going!!!

This is the one I will be going to: http://www.sewickleyhunt.org/

I can wear my jeans (yay!). I feel so much better in my jeans and half chaps mostly because I ride in them every day and only put show clothes on to show but also because this will be my horses first real time out of the ring so I wanna make sure I “stick” to him if he does anything silly

Regardless, clothes are really the least of it. I’m excited to be going!!! Can’t wait to come back and share my experience!!

AliBus - you have a PM

New England folks…Aquidneck island???

Just wondering if anyone in the NE area has done the Aquidneck Island pace? I’m interested to hear about the footing, jumps etc…it’s in Portsmouth, RI on 10/5.

We were hoping to go to the ONBH pace instead but according to mapquest it’s 2.5 hours from us. With the cost of diesel its just not feasible. :frowning:

I went. I saw. I lived!!! Why didn’t anyone tell me I wouldn’t be able to walk after though :eek::lol:

I don’t ride that much. I don’t even ride that much when I go to shows!!! Almost 3 hours in the tack and my legs are screaming!!! Mostly because my horse was REALLY fresh at the start so I was busy absorbing his jig and wiggle in my knees and feet. Then once he got the idea of the adventure we actually trotted and cantered and jumped which means very quick posting, lots of 2pt work, and being jumped hugely out of the tack

He has such an enthusiastic jump on an average day. I shoulda known he would jump 2 ft high logs like 3’6 logs but alas I was fooled into thinking he might stop that, at least towards then end :winkgrin:

We had a few hairy moments–I almost got bucked off before we even got away from the check-in table, our first few encounters with horses passing us caused a tad of panic (by panic I mean running into the horse we were with and spinnging around to see who was coming then wishing greatly to join them and jigging when we didn’t–certainly nothing alarming to me  ) and 2 water crossings that caused some havoc–one we trail blazed up this steep bulge of a hill because he wouldn’t cross a rocky creek then lunged across, half jumped and bolted up the other side and the other water was a planned “he’s gonna jump this” but he jumped straight up in the air, came down in the middle then without taking a stride jumped straight up again…my thigh did NOT like being impaled by the pommel but I stayed on the entire time so that’s good enough for me

All in all I had a good time and considering this was my horses first ever trail ride and my first ever hunter pace (add to that I’m not much of a trail rider in general) I think we did really well! It was fun enough that I want to go back next year!! I will be in better shape and now, since I know what to expect of the “trail” and of my horse I might be game enough to try some of the actual jumps, not just the logs across the path

After telling my trainer of our day her next suggestion was Cubbing in August…now I have something new to learn about again!!! I think she’s trying to create a monster

I’m thinking ab going to the October one listed here…need to find out how far away it is though!

I highly recommend this one - super course with lots of jumps, all with go-arounds, and nice surfaces/footing. Stupendous views from the upper part, mix of woods and fields. Nice people and good hot food afterwards.

It’s not too long - we did it in 1 hour 20 minutes last year, and that’s two greenies trying not to go too fast.

It’s October 12th in Columbia County, New York

We have a great Hunter Pace Clinic…

It’s too bad you don’t have the Clinic and Hunter Pace that we have (through Los Altos Hounds)

It is the perfect intro to Hunter Paces (and a nice little XC school) The morning is spent in a clinic format, teaching everyone what to expect, how to do it - schooling the horses, etc.

The afternoon is the Intro Hunter Pace - and it was literally in a big field…very short.

Would have been less mind-blowing for your TB probably  But glad you had enough fun to go again!

Here’s a clip of the Hilltopper (did you do that one?) It’s super easy! I’m on my liver Morgan, my sister is on her red-head Arab, and my friend is on her palomino Morgan:

And here’s the Intro HP class (jumping pairs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvYo_cJUP5o

We are lucky to have this clinic and intro pace every year! It’s great for greenies, newbies and oldies

That clinic setting is pretty neat! That might have been a big help to me - my horse on the other hand? I don’t think he cared so much about being out in the wild or about there being other horses around (he shows, spends weekends in strange barns, etc and never bats an eye) but I think it was the combo as well as being somewhere he’s never been before. The clinic setting would have given me a chance to wear him out a bit so that would’ve been a good thing

When I show, if it’s some place new, he’s pretty fresh and ends up getting a good lunge to remember what he’s doing there. Once he’s been to a place, next time we go back, it’s as if he lives there every day. I’m sure he’ll take to the HP the same way next year…at least I hope

He’s a very sensible guy and he’s 10 so he’s not a baby. He’s not been around much but he really takes to new things well. My other horse has me trained to be a bit jumpy so I’m sure things would’ve been easier if I could’ve just relaxed more from the start myself. Next time it’ll be better for both of us and I’m sure it’ll be even more fun

It’s easy to see why you guys love Hunting so much though - it’s the best of both worlds really

I’ll be going to the St. Malachi pace near Unionville on Sunday (provided no other truck or trailer defects occur… darn squirrels eating wires…). It’ll be my new horse’s first pace. I’m so excited, he really loves it at home, so hopefully he’s OK with the crowd!

Like the others have said, I’ve only been to paces that people wore schooling attire. Its great fun, my favourite riding outing, for sure!

Oh shucks!

I found your thread a week too late!! I am dying to go on a hunter pace, and was just talking to people last night to see if you can register and go, or if you have to belong to the hunt club at sewickley to go along. I was under the impression their paces were member’s only and you could only go if you’re a guest with a member, but maybe I can work it out for next year…

No need to be a member for the pace  The pace was $60 and it’s open to anyone who wants to go! Definitely go next year!! It was a ton of fun. I wish there was another one in Sewickley so I could go again right now!

It sounds like you’re western PA, eastern OH area (I probably missed your actual location if you already posted it!), so just thought I’d mention that the Chagrin Valley Hunt has a Hunter Pace this comming Sunday on the East side of Cleveland. Maybe worth a go for you if you want another pace before next season, especially with fuel prices taking such a big tumble recently!

Yup! I’m in the Pgh area  I have plans for this coming Sunday…but they are at night  I could most likely go up there, do that, get home, shower, and be out the door in plenty of time! Hmmm…my wheels are turnin’ now!!! Of course, it’s going to be quite chilly…but perfect for a long ride

Ok…off to look into it. Not sure if it’ll work or I’ll be able to convince anyone to trailer me up there but I’m gonna try  Thanks Dices!!!

oh yeah: gas! $3.09!!! It’s almost free :uhoh::lol::winkgrin:

2 TBS - I was looking back through this thread when I came across this post which seems like might be quite handy for you if you missed it the first time.
Great idea, 2 tbs! Here’s a link to dates for Eastern Ohio/Western PA hunter paces:

http://www.minitrialseries.org/index_hp.htm
I knew the CVH Hunter Pace was at White North Farm, just wasn’t sure exactly where that was until I saw that website. Unfortunately I won’t be going myself as I’m away from Cleveland for a month+ on work training, but the gf and one of her students will be both competing and helping out.

So hopefully you’ll manage to make it over there, I’m sure you’ll have another great time if you do

Looks like I’m outta luck. My horsie is losing a shoe and the farrier can’t come until Monday :frowning: It’s loose, not hanging off, but not exactly set for a long ride in the great outdoors :frowning: I was having trouble arranging a trailer ride as no one else wanted to go so it would’ve been a long drive for someone.

That’s ok. I will head to a show next weekend and then take the winter off. I will have all summer to trail ride and work on getting more comfortable out of the ring (both me and my horse!) so we can be ready for Sewickley again next year :smiley:

I’m saving the link too - maybe I can prepare earlier and hit up a couple paces
