Hunter timeline - ties and derbies?

Interesting @Amberley, thanks

See if you can find some books on hunting and on hunter shows and hunt seat riding from the decades you’re interested in. One of my favorites is this one:

Jane Marshall Dillon’s IForm Over FencesI has some great photos, taken at shows as well as in lessons.
Those two are from the 1960s; I think IHunt CountryI may have some newer editions as well.

Google Jackie Kennedy Hunting for lots of photos over the years and how her headgear changed through the years and seasons.

Thanks, I will check them out.

In the UK ratcatcher means a tweed jacket and also as a whole the informal dress (tie or colored stock vs white) that goes with it. In the US it means a shirt, and also informal dress.

“He’s in disgrace." The words in that clear, child’s voice, had the ring of a bell tolling, but she went on: “Coming out in that beastly rat-catcher coat and mean little tie like something from Captain Morvin’s Riding Academy.” - Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited 1945

I found a couple photos of Jackie (Bouvier) Kennedy wearing shirt and tie.
The first is from 1939. It looks like the girl sitting on the car is wearing a tie and derby.

This one is from 1962. Is that the summer “salt sack” type jacket I’ve heard of??

This is a 1917 picture of my great uncle Arthur Brown, who was (paid) “staff” for for several hunts in Rutland / Leicestershire, including “terrier man” for the Quorn. Bowler hat with stock tie.

Yes, the second photo is a classic “salt sack” linen jacket.
