Hurricane Florence—info, resources, etc.

Resource listing:

The NE TN area I’m in (Bristol/Kingsport/Johnson City TN) is only an hour up I-26 from Asheville and the morning news reported that hotels here have discounted all their rooms for evacuees (and I’m pretty sure they weren’t super-high to begin with!). More info is available through the Kingsport chamber FB page, but I’m not on FB so I can’t search for it. Probably “Visit Kingsport” or similar.

To my dear COTHer friends in the south that may be affected, Sending you all Hulk size jingles and prayers that you and all your loved ones and critters are safe from what Florence kicks up. I will be thinking and fretting about you till its over. Stay safe! Hulk.

Hope everyone is as prepared for the weather as possible.

this storm is going to effect a huge part of the east coast and will almost certainly bring big swings in air pressure along with the weather…lots of horses are sensitive to big changes in air pressure (colic)…keep an eye on your critters and keep the banamine and vets number handy.

Jingles for ALL …

Be prepared
Be safe
Be careful

Safe travels if evacuating …

JINGLES !

I was just thinking about that too!! What a nightmare. Do you remember how it felt leaving F and A at the barn after all, thinking we might never see them again?

Jingles for all in the path of this storm.

Oh my! This sounds so worrisome. We live about as far away - on the opposite side of the continent - as we can get and a stiff breeze is uncommon.

I see on tv that some people are intending to stay, despite evacuation orders and I keep imagining that if they need to get out they will have left it too late.

I looked up Tryon - seems they do not seem so worried, but surely they will not escape the torrential rain? I will keep an eye on Eventing Nation. Canada is drawn first to go - they will not know how it rides, but the first horses out will not ave to contend with ruined footing - by the time the last rider on the last horse (Switzerland?) goes, it may be a mess…just speculating since I’ve never encountered anything like this.

Tell me how you all are doing if you are in the region - thanks - sending thoughts.

In New Orleans after Katrina I escorted a woman to her home to show her where her husband’s body was found, he and a neighbor both died… she wanted to see for herself, her comment was I told him to not stay

Ugh, don’t tell me this. My mom won’t leave her barrier island. Nothing more I can do to talk sense into her.

I think that the NOAA National Hurricane Center is an excellent website. No commercial interest, just science.

and this woman said her husband always stayed and partied … he was not expecting the water to go over the top of the house

No one expects it until it happens to them and then it is too late. She is being ridiculous and has so many inland offers of shelter. Nope, she doesn’t want to leave because she is worried it will take a while to get back on the island if she goes. To me that is a good reason not to be there during the storm but far be it from me to apply reason to this situation…

Forecast track as of 2pm (scroll down a tiny bit) https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at…?cone#contents

The Weather Channel crawls says Charlotte Motor Speedway is open for evacuees. NASCAR always steps up for shelter for those who have to leave. Xfinity (Comcast) opened their wi-fi hotspots in the entire area that could be affected.

Anyone who is so foolish to stay behind should have axes, and in a pinch, shotguns, so you can blast a hole in the roof to get out when the flood waters trap you in the attic. They should also write their name, and contact information on their body with a sharpie, so they can be identified easier. Tell anyone staying behind that, and if it changes one mind, that is something.

I think any parent that keeps a kid with them in a mandatory evacuation area should get criminal charges for what happens to their children. I still remember before Katrina, the people being interviewed and saying the usual, we’ve been through this before and my family is riding it out. ANd right there with them were kids. How many died?

I used to work at Army helicopter central, and the Katrina stories were horrible by crews in the years after Katrina. I can’t even discuss them, because people were telling me because they couldn’t keep that burden to themselves, and I promised not to tell specifics.

There are convoys of electrical company trucks already heading to the impact area, they always do. If you are going to leave, leave now. Waiting can get you stuck in a traffic jam. If leaving now means you can’t board up, leave anyway. Things can be replaced, but lives can’t.

If you need somewhere to go, announce it on here, and I’m sure you will have a place for you and your animals.

You can get local forecasts here, just type the location or move your cursor over the area and click;https://www.weather.gov/

This. Mandatory evacuation areas have no fire, ambulance, or police crews to help you. Get out NOW. And if insisting on staying, write your information on your arm in sharpie. This is a serious storm and I think it is going to have devastating consequences, even much further inland than some seem to think. Flooding wise!

Do people in these areas just not have experience with hurricanes? I watched several people being interviewed on the news and they were ho hum, no big deal, just another day. This is a massive, powerful storm. Make arrangements and get out now if you are in the direct path of this storm.

There is a woman in Florida who stayed behind with her sick mother, and other family during the mandatory Irma evacuations. The woman’s mother died, and she wants to sue because first responders wouldn’t come out in hurricane conditions, during a mandatory evacuation, to take her mother to the hospital. What part of mandatory didn’t she understand? And when the authorities say they aren’t coming out in a hurricane they’re not kidding. She also said they should have sent a helicopter to evacuate her mother and the rest of her family during the height of the storm.

My signature line says my opinion of all of this.
