Hurricane Florence—info, resources, etc.

We are well out of the path of the storm. Expecting only nor’easter-type conditions. But we’ve—like the rest of the east coast—had so much rain this year that trees on power lines is quite possible.

I bought a generator a couple of days ago. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time when our local Tractor Supply got in a shipment (all 108 sold that afternoon). My mother lives with me and is dependent on electricity for medical equipment. Through blizzards and hurricanes, I’m tired of worrying about the electricity. With the help of family and friends we got it all set up and running. I can’t tell you how much better I feel having it.

I wish all of you in the path of the storm the very best. I am praying for everyone affected.

So our generator benefactors got down to Jacksonville, decided it was silly to leave, and came all the way back. They got back to the neighborhood at 5:30 this morning. We of course returned their generator. Easy come, easy go.

One thing that really makes me happy at this point is that I’m on town water. Power outages at our horse property were miserable due to not having water. I thought if anything could persuade my husband to buy a freaking generator, that would do it. Nope. But during Matthew two years ago, even though power was out for four days, water continued to flow here according to my neighbors.

The storm continues to be downgraded, and the track is pretty firmly to the north of us. I think we will be just fine.

Jim Cantore has moved from Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach. And the other reporters on the Weather Channel are standing on docks, or decks right next to heaving water, with high winds, and no life jackets. Meanwhile the reporters are telling people not to do dangerous things.

I am Jingling like mad for Florence to peter out before making landfall.
The stories on here are making me worry more for friend near Pinehurst.

Her plan now is to stall her aged TB with “his” mare (smallish @ just under 15H) in 1 stall, 2 Shetland-sized ponies & mini an the 2nd stall.
She has a 6H Head-to-Head she has removed all partitions from & pulled it alongside her barn - the other 3 horses will go in there if things get nasty.

Frankly, I am not fond of the idea of having horses confined in a trailer not hitched to any vehicle in windy conditions.
But she is She Not To Be Argued With even in non-emergency conditions, so I kept my peace.
Am I overworried?

Nope, that sounds bat sh*t crazy to me! But I guess if she doesn’t have stalls, she doesn’t have any other options…

Town water is not a given. My friend in the next block is on town water (I’m on a well), and during Katrina, all the power was out for a month. The water company had generators, but they ran out of fuel because of the fuel shortage all around us, and she was without water for several days. She came to my house to fill jugs and buckets for her horse.

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but can anyone orient me regarding Bluffton, SC? I think it’s near Hilton Head. I know some people who run an equestrian center there and am not in direct contact with them, but heard that they couldn’t get all their horses out due to no transportation and no stabling. I have Googled for news and all I could find was a story that officials in that area rescinded the evacuation order on Wednesday, but then the forecast worsened again. Very worried, and any local information is appreciated. Thank you!

I worry about the ones who are staying behind in mandatory evacuation zones, and keeping their kids with them.

I know that, and I also know what our water company has said they think they can do. If this were going to be a storm in which the effects in my area were equivalent to Katrina, I’d be gone. I have lots of water stored in case it is worse than expected, and will be fine.

They should be okay. My sister who lives to the south in Savannah, GA isn’t under any storm warnings. On FB friends of mine who live in Charleston were staying put and that’s a bit north of Hilton Head. Of course I’m saying this presuming the storm doesn’t change direction again.

How is everyone doing? @RMJacobs, @seabreeze, @paint_misbehavin and anyone else going through Florence?

I saw the videos early this morning of the storm surge coming in at Topsail Beach and that was just the beginning of the storm.

I’m thinking and praying for all affected!

Thank you! As far as I can tell, it looks like they should miss the worst of it.

Winds and rain bands are starting to roll through southwest Wake County/Chatham County. We are right on the line of a drizzle or a major event, could go either way. Thankfully this area tends to drain well.

Yankee Pony is displeased with being stalled tonight but begrudgingly took his night check carrot. Three of the horses (including Yankee Pony) are stalled about 30 feet off my back deck, so checking on them is a breeze. The pesky barn cat has temporary quarters in the laundry room.

We have prepped the best we can. Hopefully too much!

Stay safe friends! Make smart choices and help each other out if you safely can.

Hang in there. Thinking of you.

Friday morning - 4:00 AM Central — ABC has gone to full, non-stop coverage on Florence if anyone wants to tune in.

The he eye of Florence has not weakened as it prepares to make landfall.

the Tarr River in Greenville, NC keeps rising and currently has 2-1/2’ of storm surge. Meaning even a 100 miles inland is not out of the woods.

prayers to everyone affected------

Hope you all are doing okay this morning. Stay safe!!

We’re good this morning. Winds about 20 mph with gusts to about 30. Still have power. Not even an inch of rain so far. Horses are out grazing. Dogs and cats are all underfoot inside. I’m not letting chickens out of their house today. Otherwise they might go parasailing later.
