((hugs)) Sswor  I am so sorry for your loss.
Hugs to both you and your grieving pup.
My condolences on your loss.
Check animal control or nearby shelters. Our animal control adopts to anyone. We have lots of puppies here…if you were up for a drive, I’m sure surrounding states in your area have the same situation.
Update: He’s completely fine alone. I’ll not keep him alone forever, I think it’s best to keep dogs in pairs. Just works best for me. But for now I can relax and find the right puppy to add to my household without feeling like I have a deadline.
I do wonder how long a recovery he will need after a neuter before returning to training. This is my first serious sporting dog and the first dog I [will] have neutered while in full training.
Eta, thank you so much, everyone who offered support or condolences. Every one of you is very kind.
Ten days down time should be plenty for recovery from a neuter. Neuter is going to be minimally invasive compared to a spay
Thank you, Marshfield.
Really sorry to hear about your female. Went through a similar loss here early this year. Now I’m supervising our new puppy, as I type this.
What you want would be ridiculously easy where I live (in the deep south, where spay/neuter isn’t the rule and overpopulation is a serious problem). In fact, you’d have your pick from numerous litters this time of year. The open admission shelter near me takes in 60-100 animals PER DAY during the summer puppy/kitten season. Many surrenders are euthed almost immediately due to lack of space, insufficient numbers of adopters/fosters, and the unrelenting, overwhelming numbers. Some lucky ones are transported to the northeast… but that’s where you’ll face strict rules. Many shelters and rescues here are quite happy to adopt out to anyone who seems like a decent pet owner – including people from out of state. The strictest rule I hear of is the need for vet references, and a few will require some pets to be kept indoors. Adoption fees are usually $60 - $100.
If you’re willing to travel, let me know what you’re looking for and I’ll start keeping an eye out.
Again, sorry for your loss… I know it’s tough.
So sorry to hear of your loss. I am glad your other dog is OK. It can be heartbreaking to watch them pine. Good luck with getting a new puppy. You never know just how it will arrive.
I am sorry for your loss. You sound like you had a very loving and tender life with her.
I agree that the down time for routine neuter is minimal, the incision is small.
I think networking with fellow agility competitors is a fine idea. They know you and your dog. You obviously want to make a good character match to continue to have a happy home and it would be nice if one of your fellows actually had the dog that your could meet and greet. You might then be able to be open to a slightly older bitch if she has been started.
I do prefer crossbred dogs but not just any ol’ crossbreed. Amish farm dog is my cross of choice (heeler/smooth coated terrier) but lacking a direct Amish contact, locating them is tough. I’ve been considering other crosses but I just click with this type. I am a terrier person but the heeler adds something to the terrier blood that works well. They do not wander/run off and they are more focused/trainable then straight terrier–in my experience. Anyway, it just works for me so I think I am best off sticking with it.
