I hope am not posting this in the wrong place, but anyone adopted a hound?
I’ve always thought about adopting a hound, but we live in the city during the week. We have a large fenced yard, and of course take the dogs on lots of walks. I always thought a hound would be miserable as a city house dog, but maybe not? Anyone have their hound as a “city” pet?

Also, hounds in my experience have quite the odor. Does this go away after a good bath and living in doors, or is it just their personal scent that you can’t scrub away?

Thanks for any insight!
Neither of our retired hounds needs much exercise. They truly just prefer to sleep most of the day. They are happy to go on walks, but don’t NEED it like other breeds do. A fenced yard and a walk if perfectly sufficient to meet the needs of probably 95% of them.

When she arrived, our first hound smelled like she was living in a kennel, and her breath was really bad, as well as the slightly infected wound on her side (she was really at the bottom of the pack). After she had a good scrubbing bath, the kennel odor went away, and the bad breath and infection smell went away after we had her teeth cleaned and her side treated and gave her antibiotics. From that point on she smelled like any other house dog. The current hound has smelled fresh and sweet from the day she came to us; but then, she is a prima donna and acts like she should have been a show dog at Westminster (her hunting career was VERY short). After you bathe them, I only notice an odor if someone decides to roll in deer poop. Ick.

Now, if you get a hound from a kennel that feeds flesh, it will take a bit for their poop to not smell DISGUSTING. After about a week on kibble it adjusts.

Thanks again for all the responses. I think I will get two so they have company while I’m at work. I have a decent sized yard for them and dog door into garage- another into house.
