Yes very lucky until you have a TBI! FEI should just make it a rule and be done with it. Good
Sorry double post.

I’m thinking I read that Steffan wears a helmet schooling and in warmup, but puts on the top hat for the test. Not sure if that’s always the case, but that’s my recollection.
"Catherine Dufour—Denmark
Helmet
I really like wearing a helmet. I’ve done it for several years and I feel more secure. My trainer really wishes me to wear a top hat, so I promised him that if I move on to tomorrow, I will ride with the top hat. But I like a helmet, I feel more secure. I had my top hat on for the first time in a long time a few weeks ago, and it was horrible. I felt so naked. I had to practice riding in it again because I was so used to the helmet."
Whoever her coach is needs to be slapped upside the head. It’s one thing to choose to wear a top hat for yourself but to force someone into an unsafe choice that has absolutely no consequence to team performance is moronic and just plain unconscionable. She wasn’t the only one who is wearing a top hat because her coach is making her (I think the Germans are as well) What an awful message to send.
Funnily enough, in eventing the Brits are the dumb ones who wear top hats and at least some of the Germans wear helmets.

At least 2 US riders competed in helmets today (wasn’t able to see all the rides, sniffsniff), and they were all 4 sporting them at the awards ceremony. The times, they are a-changing.

Hard to change tradition.
Not really, just needs a rule change. It’s not like everyone was thrilled when USEF introduced the mandatory approved helmet rule. Those little velvet covered thin plastic shells were so flattering especially without the distracting ugly harnesses… except for the fact that they were completely useless from a safety perspective.

Yes
I loved seeing the helmets, too. The top hats looked old fashioned to me.

I was surprised to read that Germany forced their riders into an unsafe choice. Would those top riders really not have been allowed to represent their country if they had insisted on protecting themselves?
