I went coon huntin' last night!

“Treeing Walker Coonhound” is the actual name of the breed. EVERY coonhound already knows how to tree when they are born  I think most people call them “Walkers” simply because its a looooong name.

English coonhounds can be red tick, like my dog, and is most common, or tri-colored like a Walker. They might come in bluetick, too. I can’t remember. Originally it was a “Fox and Coon Hound” and was a mix of American coonhounds and English foxhounds.

here are pics of my boys:

What great pictures! They are all beautiful. Having a redbone, I definitely have a bias toward them, but I don’t think that you can go wrong with any coonhound.

Now I know that coonhound are born knowing how to “tree” whether they ever hunt or not, but it seems like you might be right wateryglen, the couch thing has to be genetic too.

I just have to introduce my mare to my coonhound now…should be interesting. I have only had my mare for 3 months, the coonhound for 3 years, she is a sensitive OTTB chestnut mare…(I guess I have a thing for redheads)…I wonder how she would react to his voice?

Someday, I would love to take them both on a hunt. Someday…

Yup he’s a winner!

ArabianRider! Thank you! That’s exactly what the local coon hounds looked like the other night. I’m struck with how…“meaty” or muscular they are. Very strong looking with thick necks & big, wide heads. I’m a fan of the pure american foxhound but finding the differences between hounds is difficult anymore. They are all wonderful and Ace IS a looker. In our area, black & tan foxhounds are called Penn Marydel’s and look a bit lighter but more bloodhoundy. At least I think I’m right…typical woman foxhunter…I think I’m right!!

Anytime you can expose your mare to your hounds speaking is a good thing!

wateryglen thanks We think Ace “was” a good looking dog too. He was a joy to hunt although he would go as deep in the woods as necessary and that could make for and interesting and long night. We also have a Walker male that is sooo huge he looks like a St. Bernard with short hair.

Some of the bench show dogs are more dainty and have a springy, showy gait to them. But I think the dogs are coonhounds and should hunt and be able to bench show not just show.
