Ideas for packing holes in white line

I got a huge hank of oakum and some Life Data clay mud at the farrier supply store. They were out of Keratex hoof putty.

I used a mix of clay and oakum in the gaps. Then I put some clay in the frog grooves to see how durable it is. It doesn’t seem to dry out, but most of it stayed put over the course of a ride on sansy gravel trails. I did try cotton in the past but it didn’t stay put.

The oakum plus clay seems quite solid.

I’m glad it’s staying put for you. I’ve never tried the oakum but I need to start using the clay on mine again. I clean the grooves best I can with a wire brush and a nail tip and smear the clay in.

When I do it two or three times a week the farrier can tell a big difference next trim. We’ve battled this the whole time I’ve had him. I’ve had to start rasping in between trims to see if that will make a difference.
