I have a colt who is close to 14 hands at the wither and I’m guessing almost 14.1 behind who just turned 4 months old. He’s a Popeye K and is the first foal out of an “Irish Sport Horse” (in other words, we really have no idea, but she’s a gorgeous mover!) 16.3 mare. What would be the guess about how he’ll finish? He’s very leggy but very well proportioned.
16.3-17h just based on the parents. Some foals shoot up quickly early on, then slow down. He could be an outlier, like Big Ben was, but it’s more likely he’ll be in line with his parents.
Depends on the bloodlines, how much TB blood, how much Arab blood, etc.
Depends on size of grandsire and grand dam, etc.
Depends on the size of dam and sire.
Do not be worried about size now. She will grow, and if she is a warmblood, she can grown till she is about 7 or older.
There will be gawky stages when she may look like a rangy TB. One of mine went through that stage when he was about 7 and I’d not have bought him during that period. Then he went back to “looking like a WB” with his chest and rump. He stopped at 16 hands for a few years, then went up to, well, I am 17 hands tall and I wanted him to stop at 16.3 but he kept growing and that was after he was 7 yrs of age.
So do not worry now. Do let us know how much she grows over the years.
WB growing is not like the old TB rule I grew up with, that is, 14 hands at 1 year, 15 hands at 2 years and 16 hands at 3 years or forget 16 hands. That was the old TB rule I was taught a long time ago.
