Importance of coat color in choosing a new cat or dog?

Well, all of my cats have been finds so colors don’t matter at all- I currently have a gray cat and a black cat with a white spot on his chest, and we used to to have another black cat and a brown tabby. And then we also have a blenheim (chestnut and white) cavalier. So a pretty big variety

While color really isn’t at the very top of my list, I do so much want another big yellow mutt.

Cats, well, not a whole lot of preference there as mine will always be barn cats. I love my black cat who now chooses to spend more time on my lap than hunting- though she did bring me a big rat about an hour ago! But if I had to choose I’d go with something more colorful.

Well based on my current crew I’d say I lean towards black animals lol. I’ve got black tri corgi and a black lab. Our cat is also black and white, but she was a rescue found stray… she just happened to fit my color scheme lol.

Interesting question. I go for personality; my pets all come from the shelter, so I sit down and see who comes over and wants to play or seems to pick ME.

That said, when I got my new kitty last week - chosen because he hopped right onto my shoulder and started purring - the shelter volunteer thanked me profusely for choosing a black cat, explaining, “they’re always the last to be adopted.” I thought that was odd, but there you go.

Purely unintentionally (??) I seem to be trending from light colored cats to dark colored cats. Which is actually good, since I like to wear black. We now have Old blonde persian girl (17), 8 year old shaded silver persian boy (White with some black tips), 6 year old gray dsh, 1 year old “Blue Smoke” (Gray with white undercoat) Persian boy, and new hire, black tuxedo boy of unknown age (maybe 4?).

I volunteer with a cat rescue and it’s true that plain black cats are harder to adopt out.

That being said - I don’t care for black cats either. Maybe because I grew up with one that was horrid and hissed at me if I came within 10 feet of her. Who knows? Tuxedos are cute but I just don’t like solid black.

I will also never have a long haired cat. I used to pet sit for someone with 3 Persians that I had to groom every day. It only took one time of cleaning diarrhea off of a huge fluffy cat to put me off them forever!

I don’t think I would want a Tortie either - not because of looks, but because they are crazy! (My mom has 2 and I adore them, but they are…um…special )

My current cat is my favorite color - blue gray. I also have a gray horse, which I really didn’t want. I love her, but I hate the constant cleaning! I would never buy one again unless it was REALLY special. However I’m not a fan of plain bays either. I guess I’m just picky?

Not as picky as a friend of mine though, who spent a bajillion dollars flying a lilac merle Border Collie across the country. He’s a nice dog but nothing special - and most people don’t even guess that’s he’s a BC because of the unusual color.

I prefer mud-colored (aka brownish) short-haired dogs and horses because it cuts down on the grooming chores. A grey horse or a white dog or any animal with long hair is something I do not wish to own.

I have to wholeheartedly agree with this.

However, I do own a grey horse. She was everything I wanted, but happened to be grey. I’d never go looking for one.

No white house pets.

And preferably no blue eyed dogs. Blue eyes in dogs and horses kind of creep me out.

I’m really not fond of black, on dogs, cats, or horses. We’ve had black dogs and cats, mostly dumped, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them, just not my preference. I’m a brown-red girl…

That’s interesting about the black cats! My guy is all black - although his underfur is white, kind of cool, IMO… I had no idea that it was an unpopular color!!

Never gave color a second thought on cats… they just “arrive” in whatever color they happen to be. With dogs, I prefer retrievers - so my only three dogs in my lifetime have been a golden, a yellow, and a black (current) lab. I think horses are pretty in any color, but right now I have a black TB, a grey TB, a super dark brown Morgan, and a white Welsh pony! It would be my secret desire to have one of those metallic gold Akhal Teke horses because those HAVE to be the coolest animal color on the planet, but that’s not likely to happen any time soon!

My dogs have a lot of white and they are actually very easy to keep clean; but I would never want a grey horse! Maybe it’s different because they are much smaller and don’t lay in manure (as much as they would probably enjoy it).

Yes. I must always have at least one tortoiseshell kitteh. I always have had, ever since I was in my teens.

I don’t turn down other colors - I also have a grey tabby - but I have to have that one tortie.

Dogs - don’t care. I have border collies, so two of mine are black and white, but I also have a tri. I’d love a red, too.

Also don’t care about horse color. As long as it’s not white. Pink skin burns like crazy down here about half the year. There’s only so much zinc oxide one can slather on.

I never wanted a gray horse either, it just happened to work out that way.

Seriously, if I could somehow dye her so she was a chestnut, I would do it in a heartbeat. She’s brown most of the time anyway!

I think chestnut is the perfect color - doesn’t stain easily; doesn’t bleach out in the summer either; my chestnut mare always looks clean, unless she’s coated in mud, but even a quick brushing and she looks good again.

I have a horse of every color except grey: chestnut, bay, black, silver dapple & a B&W pinto mini. Chestnut is by far the easiest to manage.

I love orange cats. I have since I was teeny tiny. My boys are orange. I didn’t seek them out, but my high school friend who works in the shelter they came from and picked them out for me knew I would be a sucker for a couple of handsome orange kitties (and that I was extremely likely to take on their “health” issues). I have had one other orange cat. I’ve also had a two greys, a calico, and a couple of blacks. And a white one…not to mention everything else my family had as I was growing up. I do love orange kitties. The color is sentimental and why I’m drawn to them.

Both my last dog and my current dog are black (Stella isn’t completely pitch black. She has brown/beige angel wings and her belly is brown/beige). I had black labs as a kid. I’m probably sentimentally drawn to black dogs, especially labby type dogs. That being said, I am also drawn to fawn, ridgey like dogs since my last dog, while black, was very, very ridgy. I didn’t seek out a black dog when I got Stella. We just clicked. A dog I really would have liked to have kept that I fostered was more of a sheperdy looking dog.

My sister loves yellow dogs. Again, a totally sentimental thing to her. Probably also has something to do with our dad, who used to joke that the best dogs were yellow (like his last dog before he past away). She’s had two yellow, labby type dogs in a row. While she didn’t seek out the second yellow one (she came close to picking a black dog), the fact that the dog she ultimately took home was yellow drew her to her.

I think it is similar to our preference in horse color. I love and prefer bays. My best horses have been bays. I don’t SEEK bays out, but I often joke that the best horses are little brown TBs (my three best eventers have been exactly that). I’m also very, very partial to palominos. Again, it’s a sentimental thing. I knew a couple as a kid and they were GREAT. I then ended up with three in my barn at the same time and THEY were great. We got to saying that everyone needs a golden pony. Those three were such awesome little dudes.

So, as long as it isn’t something about them matching the decor (I give up with that. I have a black dog and a white duvet. The cover I have to keep her black dog hair off the white duvet is navy…and I have two orange cats. I’m damned no matter what!), I think it often boils down to sentimentality. I don’t think there’s anything necessarily wrong with that.

I have been picky about cat color only in trying to make sure were different from the last ones… I love brown tabbies but after my adored 17 year old died, I just couldn’t do another that looked like him. I decided I specifically wanted a lynx point teenager and shelter-shopped until one popped up… and when I met him I knew he was perfect. He is a ridiculous monkey and a total cuddle-bug and exactly what I needed after nursing my elderly guys for several years.

The plan was to get one older adult and two young ones, but when I went to pull one from a local AC that was closing and going to euth any leftovers, I came home with two more adolescents. It was a kitten tornado around her for awhile.
