Indoor rabbit cage suggestion

There’s always Craigslist but I’m not seeing anything there that you probably want to contemplate using in your classroom.

I looked at Craig’s List too now that i’m not on my school computer… nothing seemed too promising.

I’m thankful the rescue gave me her cage, they’re expensive!

The weird thing is that you will often see the same ones sold as cages for the small rodents that go “Wheeek!” that are so cute that we can’t even say their name without going “Awww!” for 1/4th less. Gotta love commerce. The local shelter uses a long cage for their bunnies that might suit your needs but I don’t know the make or model so I will have to get back to you on that.

Uh - what earlier post? If you’re talking about an earlier THREAD, then post it. But there’s no “earlier post” here than the first one I responded to.

Gee PaintPony - you must be new to COTH. You need to investigate the basis for your own snarkiness before posting it - LOL!!![/QUOTE]

I don’t know why I’m even bothering to respond to this, but …Dear Bacardi - please pardon my mis-use of the word post when I meant thread. That was a mistake, but most other posters managed to figure out what I meant.

And FYI I have been on COTH since 1998. I lost my original user name when the forum changed websites, so it only appears I have been here since 2006.

However I clearly don’t have the kind of time you do to post over 1,700 times in a year. Perhaps I am out living my life instead of being rude to strangers on the internet?

And, done!

My house rabbit lives in an X-Pen (designed for dogs) when I am not home. Would you be able to set that up somewhere? It is a light metal articulated fence that can be bent into different shapes.

The dance floor you mentioned sounds promising - if you put a large sheet of painter’s plastic down (comes in super cheap rolls) with an old sheet/blanket on top, she’ll be able to get her purchase on the floor. If you left her in the pen overnight it would give her lots of free time to move around on her own. You would just need to put in a litter box for her (assuming she is trained). and water, food of course

She could then go into the cage when you needed the dancing space. Just a thought

I used an XPen for my english lop - but it didn’t work for my mini-buns, they can fit between the bars. I put them in the xpen to clean their cage and then next thing you know they were running all over the house LOL. Not a big deal, they get supervised out time, but not usually unless I plan it !

I have not read through all of the replies. I think its great that you are exposing your students to fun and responsibility of caring for a pet. I have 3 house rabbits of my own. They have their own exercise area that is contained using several metal dog exercise pens hooked together to form a large area. We have hard wood floors so I bought a few 6x9’ cheap carpets at home depot to put underneath for comfort and traction. My rabbits are litter trained (spaying/neutering does the trick).

My only word of advise if your rabbit is kept in a wire cage for any length of time is to maybe put a piece of cardboard/towel, carpet on a section of the wire so she can get off the wire. Standing and moving on that wire can do a number on their feet. Also, rabbits are natural burrow-ers. So maybe provide a space (like a cardboard box with a whole cut in the side) where she can go to be by herself. That might help alleviate some of the stress she’s under. Like any animal (or person) she needs a place where she can feel secure.

Hey Meredith - I checked the local (Eastern Shore) Craigslist and a couple of potentials popped up if you’re willing to make a bit of a drive:

This one is gorgeous, but might be too big: http://easternshore.craigslist.org/grd/3246370873.html

Don’t know what size this one is:

In Baltimore City:

Not sure if it would be “classroom appropriate”, but I used to use dog crates for when my indoor rabbits needed to be contained. Some have pull out trays, but I don’t find those necessary because rabbits are pretty easy to litter box train-- just put the litter box where they choose to go.

The dog crates gave the rabbits more room than traditional wire cages sold for rabbits, and you can often find them really cheap at yard sales, on craigslist, etc.

ETA: I didn’t read the thread, I see several folks already suggested the same thing! Great minds, I suppose!

So I got a cage! It’s really nice, I got it from my local feed and garden store. However I really want to get a play pen for her so she has even more room on the floor. I read the size descriptions but I can’t envision it. What size would be appropriate for her but not ridiculous for a classroom?

Glad you found something that will work for you, Meredith!
Don’t know how big your bun is, but you might want to look into dog ex-pens instead of the “small animal” ones. They’re available in a wide variety of heights and the panels are generally a little wider (24" vs. 18") than the small animal versions, which means you can create a bigger space for the critter (or not, just fold up the panels that you don’t need if you want to create a smaller area).

If you’re around Elkton, I know you can find them at Concord Pet!
