You should carry your sandwich in your sandwich case. Every individual hunter should carry what he/she needs for a day of hunting. And no more. Your cell phone and stock tie and wire cutters should suffice. The field master is responsible for showing sport (and keeping field members from interfering with sport), not babysitting. Even third field. I speak as one who has led a third field of ‘never ever hunted’, more than thirty riders, way back in the early 80s at Bull Run. Yeah, you give empathy and control tips and such. But you aren’t the medic. JSwan has a good idea- focus on explaining the sport and nuances when you have the opportunity to do so. Now- I will say- it could be handy to have a cooperative and equally capable member riding ‘drag’ for third field, to make sure they stay together and/or help out with individual problems. I rode drag for Loudoun West one year for the intergalactic field hunter championships (on ol’ Pride!), which was a good thing- even ‘experienced’ foxhunters need some help from time to time.
Note to Lex. Anybody who needs a compass to get around their hunt country would not be asked to be a field master.
