I can chuck my own experience into your anecdotal bucket that I’ve seen persistent, nonhealing (glandular) ulcers sometimes have an allergic component – particularly in imported horses and/or horses that traveled great geographical distances in their lifetime.
For most though, I’ve seen a pain component and/or failure to change management/lifestyle to better suit the horse.
