Moral of the story: get your dang pets microchipped. And keep the microchip info up-to-date!

I’m in rural-ish NC, and we have more strays/lost pets than you can shake a stick at. The vast majority aren’t microchipped. And when they are, the information is often outdated.

Friend has a Cavalier on a farm on a long farm driveway that you can see down most of the driveway from a busy road.

Dog is outside going potty and a passerby picks her up. She has a collar on with contact info and name.

Instead of calling the owner, the dog is driven 45 minutes away to a rescue. Rescue promptly vaccinates the dog and staff being putting in adoption applications on her. No one calls the number.

Meanwhile the owner is calling area shelters looking for the dog. A friend was talking with person that picked up the dog and put two and two together on whose dog that is and calls dog owner.

Dog owner calls rescue and phone isn’t answered. Drives to rescue and is turned away because no proof of vaccinations except the name and number are on the dog. Dog is chipped too. Oye.

Just so weird to me to vaccinate a dog and no one stopped and called the actual person on the collar??

I’ve picked up plenty of cats and dogs and it’s never crossed my mind to not call the number on the tag first.

@starrunner, it makes me question what the actual intention of the rescue is.

Most rescues get $$$ for adoptions. What is to stop them from picking up a dog off the street, giving a few shots and putting it up for adoption to make money? Especially if it is a high demand breed like a Cavalier? They know they will not be supporting the care and cost of a popular breed of dog like that for long, and they’ll have multiple applications for adoption.

Before anyone gets defensive about rescues- all my dogs and cats have come from rescues, if they are not drop offs. I know damn well there are excellent rescues who are above reproach.

Some rescues are nuts! My bet is that it was a nice purebred that would quickly be adopted. Did she get her dog back?

She did, after driving all the way back home to get the vaccination records and paying $ to reclaim and for the cost of vaccination (even though the dog was up to date already).

It was just a matter of just paying it to just get it all over with, but oye.

But yes, Cavaliers are super adoptable, but it was all just so utterly bizarre to me on why a rescue would want to make things difficult with an obviously friendly, clean, groomed dog that is unlikely to have been dumped or “wandering” for any period of time.

I do support rescue (as my cats are from humane societies), but people wonder why just a couple negative interactions can color rescues with such a bad paintbrush.

Same with some equine specific rescues that have gone above and beyond to not want to involve former owners/breeders who want to support or help their former horses.

Sounds like they could get a hefty adoption fee quickly? Makes me happy now that my dogs are not accepting of any strangers?

Even my mail person and UPS/ FedX are told just to drop the boxes out the window in my driveway if my dogs are out.

They do it gladly.
