I am asking this for a friend:
She is considering a horse in Ireland, kind of a long shot. Does anybody have an idea on shipping & quarantine costs? And shippers to use or not use.
She is in Asheville, NC if that helps at all.
Thanks in advance!

I believe Ireland still ships out of Amsterdam. Would probably have to get shipping to Amsterdam then pay for import. Don’t know if your closer to NYC or Miami. But, a gelding should be around $7-8k right now for import from amsterdam to NYC including quarantine and a mare maybe $10-11k. I had a mare come over last september and was a little over $10,500 that included the 2 week quarantine. Had a gelding brought over in April and was a little more than $7k. Of course prices always change and euro fluctuates… but I would think it is still quite accurate.
I imported a mare from Ireland in November 2014. It cost me about $8600 after all shipping and standard quarantine was added up – so that includes the trekking over land and sea to get her from Ireland to Liège to fly over, the flight itself, and the 2-day quarantine in NY. Then the CEM quarantine that mares require and all the little costs that go along with that quickly added up to another $3k or so before she was through everything and at my door. I paid in Euros for the first half of the costs, so overall it should be a little cheaper right now.
I used EIS Agency and Dutta, and I’d use them both again in the future if I needed to, although I wasn’t exactly thrilled with everything about the experience.
The great thing about EIS was that they made something I had never done before (and did myself, instead of leaving to my trainer) pretty easy, and sent me a couple updates as my mare went along.
Happy to share more details and/or answer Q’s via PM
Always a great job
We have always had great service and experience with Dutta. And once here in the States Johnson has been brilliant!
Thank you all who replied! This is a good range for ballparking the pricing. I will pass along the info to my friend!
When I imported my gelding to the US he flew from Dublin to Stansted (London) then onto Newark. Did his quarantine in NJ then transported to Texas. All told about $10k for everything. Usually if you are flying horse into Miami then he would route through Amsterdam.
Mine went from Galway to Dublin to Holland to NY down to MD. I think it was about $7500 and from what I hear from my friend over there he can still get about that much for shipping. Most sellers from Ireland are used to shipping to US so your friend should check w the seller there for their recommendations. Sometimes the cost is more depending on how long the horse is in quarantine. My gelding was less than 24 hours -though they usually tell you 2 days but my agent said they’re out as soon as lab comes back negative
