Irish Wolfhound puppy in my local county animal shelter

Those are breed rescue organizations who will often get a contact in the area to go in and adopt the dog, then home her with a suitable foster home until her history is determined, and the best permanent home found for her. If you contact them, they are your best source for getting her into the right home. Shelters are/should be familiar with breed rescue organizations.

I would especially contact http://www.iwclubofamerica.org/rescue.htm to see if they can get someone out there ASAP.

Even if she is just a mix, there’s a good chance they’ll take her on. And they usually move quickly.

Wow, assumptions here. This is not a rescue. This is animal control, as in, they hold X days and euth typically. They are trying to place this dog because of what breed she is (per the owner who turned her in). The dog would not be allowed to be kept intact. She is a puppy, she was just surrendered, and has not been spayed yet. She will have to be spayed if/when someone bails her out.

I just got off the phone with animal control and they still have her. The animal control officer doesn’t really know a whole lot. She says “Iris” is under 50 lbs, but no real idea on age. She said she thought around a year, but from having seen this dog in person, I would say she looked much younger than 12 months.

The AC officer said to give out her cell phone number to anyone who was interested and had questions. I could try to go at lunch time and get more photos of the pup if anyone wants.[/QUOTE]

I don’t know what assumptions I made. I was just countering wendy’s suggestion to keep her intact. That’s all. I suggest you try to contact the rescues to see if they will pull her. If they’re anything like Old English Sheepdog rescue they will be very proactive. You just don’t see many IWH in shelters, just like OES.

Go get her!

Go get her! :frowning:
I have never had an issue with having two females together. Right now I have 3 together.
Go save her, if you can’t keep her, we’ll find a way to get her up here to me and I’ll find her a good home. Friends of the family had an Irish Wolfhound when I was a kid, and I loved to go visit them BECAUSE of that dog!

I hope someone does adopt this cute terrier mix.

The photo shows a black and tan coat color pattern, not generally seen in IWs. Even a six month old IW bitch puppy would weigh 90-100 pounds. Probably the people who turned her in did think she was at least part Irish Wolfhound, but the size, coat, and general appearance suggests she is not a purebred IW.

But she is cute, and I hope someone adopts her.

We get calls all the time from shelters who believe they have a purebred IW or an IW mix, and very often it is not the case. The official policy of the IW rescue I work with does not allow us to spend $$ on mixes, but very often they are so irresistible that the people who have gone to look end up using their own money to help the dog, and more than one has ended up with the dog.

Young airdales have that black and tan coloring, maybe it’s an Airdale mix? I could see IWH mix though in it’s face from that picture. Hope someone gets her!

I contacted the North Texas IW rescue to see what they say.

The dog may very well be a terrier mix but she’s not black and tan. She’s dark gray and light gray. I definitely think she is a mix if she is IW.

Yes, I could just go get her, but if it doesn’t work with my GSDx female, then I would have to just rehome her again. The GSDx female has to be top dog in her opinion, and she is old and almost completely deaf now. It worked fine when she was with my male Siberian Husky, but did not work well with a male Mastiff pup (involved vet visit and stitches and rehoming of Mastiff pup, who I had only taken in for a friend in need). I do already have 3 dogs as well. The other 2 live in the house (JRT and Daschund).

Thanks, good idea about contacting the North Texas IW group.

I don’t know anything about IWs, but someone go get her! I currently have 2 females in my home and have no issues. I definitely think it has to do with breed type (intense, driven animals) and/or submissiveness (totally dominant or not). My two females are an almost 4yo Goldendoodle (that is way more standard poodle than GR) and an almost 2yo Golden Retriever. The doodle is the alpha, and the GR couldn’t be more submissive. But, it’s a great balance and works wonderfully.

My aunt actually came home with an IW from the pound. They had no idea what she was and thought she was a young adult something because of her size. When I saw her, I couldn’t believe it. She was a young puppy with HUGE feet. My aunt was a bit upset to find out she had brought home a soon-to-be ginormous dog, but she didn’t have the heart to take her back. What a great dog she turned out to be. My aunt loved that dog so much even though she barely fit in the little house my aunt lived in. It’s pretty rare when a purebred one shows up at the pound, but it does happen sometimes. I can’t tell if the one in the pic is one or not.

I was thinking Airedale mix, too, because of the grey & tan, then found some IW show photos with the grey and tan. My girl is grey, but various shades of dark grey and light grey. Here’s the conformation photo I found. I’m guessing brindle? (Click on the 2nd one from the right on the top.)

Hope the North Texas IW group can get her. If she were on the East coast, think I’d find a way to grab her myself.

My rugby coach at college had an IW. That dog was the coolest ever! He used to come to team practices. Was also great with coach’s kids, who were fairly young at the time (like around 8). Hope this one finds a soft landing…

I had a dog from the Humane Society whose mom was supposedly Old English, and he looked Irish Wolfhound only smaller. Best temperament of any dog I’ve ever known - major sweetheart, but would protect me if I felt threatened at all, super smart, easily trained, loved doing tricks.

I hope I can find an IW mutt for my next dog! My house wasn’t big enough when I got my current dog (and her “sister” who I had to put down two years ago.) Now we’re on 4 acres, and I can handle something larger.

I hope you pick this one up, and that your dogs get along well! We’ve had two (spayed) females together several times, and they always got along well.

Peg, the black and tan color was a favorite color of IWs in the 1800s, but is thought to have been bred out to the point where it is extremely rare or nonexistent in the breed now. In the photo you referenced, I think that is a grey brindle with dirty legs!

From " The Irish Wolfhound" by Mary Mc Bryde: "Captain Graham was very keen on black and tan coloring in the breed, and in his great attempts and achievements in helping the breed he worked at the latter part of his life to encourage this black and tan color, but he did not live long enough to get very far in it. One of the last of that color was Osric…

Do these colors still occur in the breed today? Well, black and tan in its clearly defined form does not seem to be present today…Perhaps one day we will see a true black and tan again."

True, there are times the grey on my girl is tan, er, brown!

Mine too! And the brindles do sometimes look as if they have rolled in something unfortunate! It is too bad we lost the black and tan color, and I also think its too bad the Scottish Deerhounds lost their wheaten color, they had that at one time.

OP, any news on Isis? And I can understand perfectly well why you cannot take her in your situation. Any word from the North Texas IW Rescue group?

No word from them yet. I may try giving them at call at lunch and see if anyone answers then.

I have 2 females and a male; the 2 females are a Staffie Bull and an APBT, and the male is a Vizsla/APBT mix - all spayed/neutered. My 2 females get along great and I would not worry about leaving them alone unattended if I needed to, I don’t just out of precaution. My male and Staffie female I don’t trust alone together at all. I am no pro by any means so 2 females can work, even 2 terriers.

I’ve heard all the generalizations, especially owning Pits and I’ve found every situation is different. In general, I would say my opinionated/selective Staffie girl mostly gets along with other (spayed) females best. My male doesn’t get along with strange dogs period.

OP, I sent Iris’ photo to the NC IW Rescue coordinator, and she said “Clearly a mix” but is sending it on to the National coordinator. I’m afraid the verdict will be the same, but it is always good to check! She said her IW was labelled a mix at the shelter, and is purebred.

Unfortunate, we do not have the funds or resources to aid IW mixes. But thanks for checking!

OP, any update on this dog? I am in the DFW metro area and may be able to adopt this dog if her location is close enough. I looked on petfinder.com but didn’t see her listed. Thank you.
