Yeah I’m definitely talking with the owners. I already talked to them about the flatting and trying some little jumps which they agreed to. Since I do want to show (the barn is around 30 minutes from show grounds) I also will talk to them about that.
I am very close with the owners and I wouldn’t do anything they wouldn’t agree to.
Not at all. You made that point very clearly. No need to repeat what has already been very well said unless its a looooong running thread, this is barely 20 posts.
I still think this very young poster should be encouraged to ride as much as possible, with owner permission, parental consent and liability release even if its not her dream horse and her parents are not going to buy it for her. Its a ride.
This sounds like a risky situation to me in terms of potential for injuring or scaring the horse and creating a major conflict with the owners. It is one thing to ask whether it is possible to train a 13 year old horse to jump (sure!) and another whether this is a good idea to do with somebody else’s horse. Sounds like a can of worms to me, especially as a frequent lessor.
Way I read the OP here, the horse is in OPs trainers barn and she is talking mainly about the owner offering her a chance to exercise the horse in that barn. IIRC OP is about the same age as the horse, English is a second language and perhaps youthful enthusiasm took over her wording.
Do not think she is talking taking over training the horse and basic saddle time is much needed to help her improve. It sounds like a good idea and trainer is there.
I think you should talk to your trainer also about what they think of this horse’s abilities. Could the horse do low level jumping? Probably. Could the horse do that well? And in show hunter style? Is competition as a show hunter a reasonable goal for the horse? Some dressage horses don’t jump all that well or confidently even if they are a super high quality animal for dressage. Some do it all quite well. We (on COTH) just don’t know this horse at all.
Just another anecdote. I used to help a teen girl that had a fairly high level (to me anyway) dressage horse. Probably third level? The horse liked to get super behind the bit and over collect and get worried. The girl wanted to jump so I helped her out and the horse just totally relaxed and poked her nose out and seemed to love the simplicity of just jumping a couple jumps on a straight line. She wasn’t going to win the hack or anything but I think she would have been quite happy to make that full transition
