Whether you want to express that as 1234 or as 1 2 3 4 it must be wholly consistent and evenly timed to be a good walk. Anything remotely off is just that…off.

This is where a good schoolmaster comes in! They have been using their bodies correctly for years, decades…you can feel them step well under themselves and place their hind feet with purpose and direction.
My dressage coach would put us on a longe blindfolded on her old lippie and make us call out footfalls. It was easier to feel on a circle at first. Up until then I was riding strung out OTTBs.
So when I watch someone who is flailing around on a pirouette vs someone who knows how to ask off the correct hind, it’s a fundamental question of riding vs pushing buttons on a patient, educated horse.
