Is this saddle too heavy for the pony? trying to order today.

I’m looking at getting a 10’ saddle for my almost 4yr old and almost 6yr old. Both are smaller sized kids but I’m wonder if this saddle below will be too much weight. It doesn’t say weight in the description so I looked online and one site says aprox . 25lbs.

Pony is around 10.3 (wears 58blanket). Here’s a picture

This one is also nice and light but not sure about white on a saddle.

A mini saddle would be too narrow right?

I wouldn’t hazard a guess on saddle fit for that pony. I will say that this is quite possibly the cutest picture on COTH however!

Can you find a used saddle for them and try it out?

Cute pony and adorable children, morgansmind.

I think there is a difference between a youth saddle made for a kid to use on a horse and a pony saddle, which is meant to be used on a pony. Compare the overall dimensions of that last saddle you linked to, which is a pony saddle, to the dimensions of the first saddle you linked to and you can see the pony saddle is smaller overall.

A true mini saddle would certainly be too small, but a regular pony saddle is bigger than a mini saddle.

However, in response to your initial question, no, the 25 pound saddle is probably not too heavy for that pony, especially considering the size of your kids and the kind of riding they’re going to be doing at their ages. What I’m less sure about is whether the overall size of the pony saddle would be a better fit than the two youth saddles you linked to.

The biggest concern with a western saddle on a small pony is going to be that the skirts are not so long that they are interfering out to the pony’s hip. The weight is not going to be a problem. A saddle with rounded skirts is going to be more forgiving than one with a square skirt.

This! The weight isn’t going to be that bad for a pony, but you definitely don’t want an overly large square skirt that’s going to rub in all the wrong places.

The white is rawhide which is actually fairly easy to clean unless it really gets scratched up and the dirt is embedded.

If it were me, I’d definitely go with the pony saddle. Don’t worry about the white, the fit will be much better for that pony.

Or. Just send me the pony and then you won’t have a saddle issue!

I’d go with a pony saddle. A smaller seat western saddle will probably be to long on the pony length and sides wise. Also the bars are not going to fit

Has pony bars

I did it! :0) I bought the pony saddle. Thanks for responding so fast and it helped out alot as I would have bought the first saddle. Good Christmas present?

The pony is the greatest…not sure why anyone would sell a healthy, TRAINED ,great with kids pony, to the Holland auction (why not craigslist?)but she was just what we were looking for several months. I know some people don’t like ac4h but if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t have this pony and we all love her. Course I didn’t know she was all that when I bought since no one tried to get on her there out but we took the chance and got lucky . She’s the pony I wished I had when I was little.

FWIW, the white on the saddle is generally rawhide. I’ve got a saddle like that. I am awful to my western saddle since I primarily ride English. I have the western saddle just for fun. The rawhide on mine looks just fine even after being abused. My saddle is probably 20 years old too.

I logged in just to say that is an adorable pic. After the shooting tragedy today this especially hit home.

It’s horrible. I was an emotional wreck yesterday. I feel so bad for those families. Those poor babies:cry:…

Both of my kids go to school 3k and 5k…I now worry about a copycat though I know the chances are slim. Makes me think about home-school.

Sad tragedy but no need to homeschool just because of another school shooting. They could hit any restaurant or mall anytime!

I do LOOOOVE this pony! What an adorable photo!
