This makes me so mad, that people could unload a horse like this onto someone else, rather that do the right thing and PUT HIM DOWN themselves. Aaaarghh!!!
OP, I am very sorry for you, and I agree that euthanasia is best, in this situation.

This is a banner case for taking x rays, vet refusing to even when owner is willing? Really odd, 20 min to add more to the bill plus itâs called for with the symptoms. weird.
Also, this is no âgrade paintâÂ. There is no such thing in the USA. Paint is color based breed operating similar to the AQHA, used to be for QHs with too much white for AQHA. Pinto would be the term for the color without the recorded QH and APHA ( Paint) lineage. There is a Pinto association but itâs color based and accepts most breeds and types. APHA is APHA or AQHA parentage. They have a Breeding Stock division for thise with the breeding who popped out with no spots.
AnywayâŠthis horse is no backyard grade, this is a very desirable loud overo with equally desirable conformation showing some quality. Heâs got papers, guarantee it. You, unfortunately, bought a burned out, used up show horse that was pushed to keep working, nerved, probably filled with NSAIDS (painkillers) until he really actually did break. Then they threw him out. Likely he was on something to mask that situation when you bought him.Sometimes lower level dealers get big barn cast offs for resale, think you might have found one if you didnât buy from the big barn.
Sorry this happened to you, both seller and that first vet failed you. Many of us have made similar mistakes. For now, this poor guy has given all he can and deserves a kind release. Seriously think about offering him the kindness and compassion his former owners couldnât be bothered to offer him preferring to squeeze a few bucks out of him letting him continue limping around in pain and breaking your heart,
Some people are real jerks. Use, abuse and dump. Old show horses deserve better then this as you deserve a better first horse then this poor guy.
Letting him go peacefully is the best option, it seems. Some of the down-the-road effects of nerving can be devastating. Between needing specific supportive shoeing and daily inspection of the nerved foot, loosely supervised pasture puffery probably wouldnât be a good fit.
The one bad case I knew personally was a barrel horse whoâd been nerved and ended up with an abscess in the rear half of that foot. He didnât show any sign of lameness until the infection had reached and set terminally in his coffin bone.
Iâm sure youâve already reached this conclusion, but I wanted to add my voice to the chorus. You should feel absolutely no guilt for having this horse euthanized. Thereâs nothing ahead of him but pain.
Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. Man this sucks. Appreciate the advice!
I have also seen that too, and have heard of it happening a few other times, and I will never ever nerve a horse personally. The one I witnessed most recently was a wonderful old retired warmblood whoâd been nerved, and exact same thing, abscess that didnât show lameness until the infection had reached the coffin bone. He was euthanized.
I agree that euthanasia is appropriate for him in the near future. His only other option would be to sell him as meat.
Thank you for not considering that option.
Lots of carrots and sweet feed and big hugs as he goes down.
I wish that humane euthanasia was an option for people
