Jingles for Evil Burrito: post 680 something EORTH :(

Oh yeah, we’re going to do everything in regards to leaving correctly. I was under contract and gave 30 days notice, and DH will do the same. Odie, not so much. As my OP 17 pages ago said, I called and asked if we could use the empty stall and was told yes. No contract.

We pay $250/horse there. We agreed that $150 for Odie would be fair, since they don’t normally deal with bedding. I supply a water tub, bedding, and hay, because Odie won’t eat their hay (he’s spoiled (hahah no really??)). When we got the email about moving him, which has been covered here, DH and I assumed that when Odie was in a stall we were already paying for, the price would go down. I told him I’d still be willing to pay something, maybe $75. The BO still hasn’t called me, and wouldn’t take my call. Her husband called instead on Sunday and said it would still be $150 (so $400 for the same spot, when DH’s horse is actually losing amenities), and then starting in Jan, they essentially want $530. The $9/day is MORE than what our normal per horse board is, for a donkey in a stall who is eating boarder provided hay. Hm.

I pled my case to my BO, who is not my trainer I board with. My BO has a six stall barn with attached runs, similar to this set up, except the runs don’t open to a paddock. Each spot is filled, but we can section a back portion of a run for Odie. Her only caveat is that we rig some form of shelter, because she can’t handle seeing an animal with no shelter. I asked if we could go all Hurricane Katrina  and stretch a tarp, and she said yes.

I’m going to ask my trainer if we can borrow her trailer, or pay her gas to haul him, because she has the style trailer I want and has a ramp. I figure taking it nice and slow, and he’ll be okay to haul with his cast. In fact, I think it’s probably safer to haul him with the cast at this point, and not right after the cast is removed. And an update, his appointment for the cast removal is Jan 2 :). Three whole months!

You have a HERD?? In WA? Nearby, can I come see? I showed DH Odie’s breeder’s site, where the wee donkettes are sold for thousands, and tried to convince him that I needed some jennys (no jack, Odie shall be the john of my heart forever and I don’t want nothin disrupting that!).

DH said no. He knows me so well. He said that I wouldn’t let the donkettes go. I said I would, no problem, because I would have other burritos .

Basically I was picturing Rory in a field surrounded by tiny herd of mini donkeys. He would be SO HAPPY!
Oops, I was a bad OdieFriend and didn’t come back to check this thread!

Well, I’ve got a “herd” of 3 minis plus a standard. That is two, er, formerly jacks, both named Jack, but now, er, johns as you said, and a jenny; plus a standard jenny.

Technically speaking, I guess, three would be a crowd, four I consider a herd. So, no, not a real breeding farm herd, just a collection type herd.

Sorry.

Actually, you said you could sell the donkettes and be happy with the herd, but I could never breed them, because I would keep them all. It’s an illness.

Now caught up with the continuing donkey-stall-drama. Good Grief!

What a shame. But looking for silver linings, yeah, might be better to get him moved now while he still has the cast on. But what a PITA.

DH gave his notice, as the facility we looked at has a huge covered arena and is closer to my barn, and has roping chutes, etc, which is up his alley. His BO’s response was to try to up his board beyond what the new boarders are paying, to $300/. Hurray for contracts :(.

Yikes. She called him and basically said that she thought she was being reasonable and they have done a lot for us because they allowed Odie to have bedding, and doesn’t know why he’s leaving. I guess ~$530/stall is reasonable? She justified the charge because she said it takes her husband an extra 20 minutes in the morning to muck Odie’s stall.

Also, my BO called yesterday, she doesn’t want one of her horses to lose any of its attached run now, soooo… Hmmm. She said we can use some round panels to create something in Rory and Nika’s paddock (again, with a cover), so I’m going to ask my trainer if I can borrow a few stall mats she has not in use, and create a stall. Does that even sound feasible??? Should I use bedding? Conversely, I know a surgical glove will fit over the cast, so maybe the softer ground would be better if I keep the cast dry?? Thankfully it is NOT muddy. But I also don’t want to create a huge mess, so maybe mats would be better?

20 minutes to pick up in the morning after a teeny little donkey? Really? He must suck at mucking stalls, but still wants to get paid a pretty penny for it. Good that you’re getting out of there.

ok, math was never my strong point, but wow… she sure knows how to add up some numbers… and you said you supplied the bedding, so they make up for that in charging more to muck?

I am glad you are moving DH’s horses too. That will teach her she can’t push good boarders around like that… hoping things work out for little Odie and that he gets a room with a roof!!

Well, it’s going to look like a dog run or a Hurricane Katrina house  but there will be pictures!!

^^^ that could actually work! Just needs a little bit of an attached run and, voila, donkey apartments!

He’s so tiny he could use a calf hutch…a neighbor uses them for her miniature horses: https://www.google.com/search?q=calf+hutch&tbm=isch&source=iu&imgil=yqFvlc62i6zhLM%3A%3Bhttps%3A%2F%2Fencrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com%2Fimages%3Fq%3Dtbn%3AANd9GcT2sWQWFTkbOiKiCp1oK_ovGSkq-MAyc0l19O8kiSYzIWSHI1ix%3B800%3B281%3B3_opKddjBc4lfM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.permies.com%252Ft%252F15474%252Fgoats%252FGoat-Tractor-Shelter-wont-kill&sa=X&ei=Dl2zUrD8OMfmkAeT2ICQAw&sqi=2&ved=0CDgQ9QEwAg&biw=1867&bih=1004&dpr=0.9#facrc=&imgdii=&imgrc=yqFvlc62i6zhLM%3A%3B3_opKddjBc4lfM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.permies.com%252Ft%252F15474%252Fa%252F5174%252FCalf-hutches.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.permies.com%252Ft%252F15474%252Fgoats%252FGoat-Tractor-Shelter-wont-kill%3B800%3B281

Hahah, DH would muuuuuuurder me!
Nah! Once Odie doesn’t need it anymore it could be his new tool shed! Of course, once Odie is comfortably settled into his cute little shed he may never want to move out but we don’t need to tell DH that! They are portable though

You could build one of these; http://www.smithssectionalbuildings.co.uk/products/pony-stable-8x8.php

Update

Due to the weather, Odie hasn’t had a chance to go outside in a while. DH and I went to the barn to meet the farrier, and I put a glove on Odie’s cast so he could wander around outside with supervision.

Video

Apparently, not enough supervision.

I tried to wander over and listen to DH and the farrier talk, because they were talking about Rodeo Girls (farrier is married to Barb on the show), and I looked out in time to see Odie heading for a large pile of dirt at a very fast trot.

Buttmunch decided to channel an inner Event horse that I was unaware he had, and he climbed a 4.5 foot mound (to a mini donk, it’s a MOUNTAIN) of dirt and then LEAP off the top like it was a jump at Rolex, and take off bucking and farting.

Soooooo… He got a lot more supervision after that.

The mound of dirt. I swear it’s taller than it looks, because the taller one is about my height.

He initially started out close to the barn, but then he ventured out. To the outhouse, even. And then over here, until the farrier showed up. After that, he had to investigate his tools, use his anvil as a scratcher, and supervise the activities.

I am kind of worried that he is not getting along any better than he is.
How long has it been now?

At least the x-rays you said are looking ok?
Maybe he will just have to learn to walk on that leg again once it heals.

He looks wonderful and still very contented with his odie-ness self.

Thanks for the update.

Yeah, I keep getting worried about it, and then vet says not to be. He says most likely it is the cast, and Odie doesn’t want to walk on it.

On one hand, bad because he isn’t using the leg.

On the other…waaaaaaay less chance of the cast rubbing him.

So I dunno. Xrays look good, and trainer and I are prepared to go super slow and accommodating with him in regards to starting turnout. He won’t be out with Rory for a few more months. The plan is to move him to the temp stall this coming weekend, cast removed Jan 2, a week in the temp stall with the splint, make the temp stall bigger or move him daily into one of the runs my horses are in at night and back into the stall at night for a week, then dismantle the stall and leave him locked in a run during the day and then leave Rory locked in a run at night and Nika and Odie can be loose. Do that until we feel it’s safe for him to be out with Rory during the day.

Which all comes down to how well he walks on it sans cast. At this point, there’s no telling WHY he isn’t walking on it, because medically and physically there is no reason for him to NOT be walking on it.

To add, he’s been casted since Oct 2 I think? I’d have to go back to the first few pages to make sure, but I know it was right around there. So he’ll be three months in the cast, which is a LONG time. :frowning:

Yes, giving it time is all you can do with such injuries.

I also limp a little from an old hip injury.
Doesn’t slow me down much, but would definitely not pass a vet check.

Odie sure doesn’t look like he is hurting, so he has all the time in the world to heal.

Do you have roundpen panels to use to make his little home? Jerry always has a million sitting around that you could probably borrow. Also, I was thinking that Odie should move in with Yukon while he is in house arrest. He still has another month to go of confinement due to all his surgeries. Poor boys of Whidbey.
