I wish you could still get adult size jodphurs in Canada. I had to get my last 2 pairs in the UK. I like wearing mine with paddock boots and full chaps.
Awesome article ReSomething!

I think it’s an age thing.
ETA our thrifty instructor had our parents use jeans and exercise bandages on top to stop chafing till they could afford boots.
I recall my father saying that they just used bailing twine to wrap around pant legs when he was working, way back in the dark ages. Maybe that was just a guy thing.

RPM, what is your general location in the US? I have only ever heard of jods being used in reference to the riding pants worn with paddock or jod boots, that have a cuff on the end
Yes, that is what I said in my post, except for the bell-bottom Kentucky jodhpurs, which have no cuffs. I live in the Southeastern US.
Someone asked (and someone else replied) about the old-style jodhpurs with flared tops. A good example of those are the ones Velvet wears in National Velvet, with paddock boots. BTW, when I was a child, “paddock” boots laced up; “jodhpur” boots had elastic sides (sort of like Beatle boots) or really cool straps that looped around the ankles and buckled in place. I haven’t seen those in years!
You need your jodphurs to have strapping all the way down to the cuff if you want to prevent pinching.
That is such a practical garb for hot summer hacking! Much cooler than tall boots or half chaps. My last pairs from this country were from Millers about 20 years ago and I wore them into holes… I think I can still buy them in England, though, and need to put them on my shopping list for this spring’s trip.

Scroll down for a photo of Queen Elizabeth (then Princess Elizabeth) wearing flare-top jodhpurs with a lovely pony. There are also pictures of adults wearing breeches and boots. Years ago, paddock boots were often called paddock shoes, and the boots in “breeches and boots” almost always meant tall boots.
We also referred to the pants as “peg-top” jodhpurs or breeches.
The cool buckled boots are shown here, along with some good info about jodhpur boots and jodhpurs:

You forgot the joy of putting your knee out through them as they had no stretch.
And although this probably outs me as the Equine Dinosaur on this thread…
How about the lovely bruises along the outside of your calf, as said flared & non-stretchy breeches had a row of 4-6 buttons that served to snug them to your leg.
Ouch.
For me jodphurs mean any riding pant that can be worn with paddock boots - meaning the hem is at the ankle, not mid-calf.
Anyone remember Hac-Tac brand denim jods?
Loved them, bought nearly every color, wore them to death & cannot find them anywhere anymore : (
Here’s a UK shop that carries Hac Tack denim jods:

They look comfortable!
Weren’t the flared hips called “pegs?” In my world breeches are worn with tall boots, jods with jod or paddock boots. No half chaps with jods. Somewhere I have a pic of me, as an adult beginning rider, in my rust one way stretch jods that were slick as ice. Guess that’s how I developed a good leg.
I think the “peg” part of the jods is not the flares but the tight calves, as in they make the lower legs look like pegs.

What about the (back in the day) breeches that had the big flare in the thigh? I loved them.
Me too! Haven’t had a pair of those in decades! Would love some. Someday I will treat myself to a pair from Horse Country.
I think the elastic sock type bottoms on breeches are nice. I hate that crappy Velcro style. It itches and glumps.

My mother has a lovely pair of russet brown jodhpur boots with straps circa 1960s. She still wears them now and then but not to the barn!
I had puttees from India when I rode. In fact all the motorcycle police in Zambia wore them. I loved them. Stiffer than current had chaps.
I also had flared breeches those things were so Aug on the knee yes as there was no stretch to the fabric. I had a pair custom made with a stretch fabric and wore them oit. I loved them. Maybe I should do it again
