Joining the hip pain club

PT said that the heel height on the terrains is probably pushing my femur enough forward to hit the tear.

Said to try to find boots w/ a lower heel height, or try something like having a shoemaker built up the part under the toe so that there isnt so much drop front to back.

I also have trigger points ALL OVER the place. Maybe my lower twisted-x will work when some of those are out.

I had a cortisone shot last Wednesday (so 1.5 weeks ago) and have been feeling much the same as before - same muscle pains and so on. Today I rode, though, and I had ZERO pain. I am over the moon! This is the first time I’ve ridden without pain in years, honestly.

Unfortunately I think this means that they will likely recommend surgery for a long term fix (I’m 29).

If it makes you feel better I just had the labral surgery at 25.

And all of you were right. I saw my surgeon the other day and he said I’m on track for a 6 month recovery. I just wish he told me this from the beginning, instead of hearing it from him 4 months in. I appreciate you guys telling me this ahead of time! I’m hoping I will be in the saddle around that time as well.

My surgeon recommended buying an estim machine (cheap one) and said that it would drastically help. Has anyone tried this? Looks like I can pick one up for around $30. It wasn’t exactly in my budget and this is workers comp so I don’t really want to spend money on this.

I bought a estim off of Amazon when I first started PT. I love the thing. I use it while I ice mostly but sometimes with heat. I think the one I bought was about $50

is etsim different from TENS?

My question, too!

I can’t answer that question but can say that I have bought what I call a TENS but they called it something stim, can’t remember exactly what they called it. It is called Magic Massage and it feels exactly the same as the stim they use in my PT except this does all sorts of different patterns that supposedly do different things while the one in PT is constant. I paid $100 for it and it was worth ten times that in terms of pain relief. Not sure if you could get by with one of the cheaper ones or not but it would be worth a try I think.

This is what I was looking at. My PT mentioned Tens which is a lot more reasonably priced then what he uses. I’m going to show him the link to this one tomorrow. $30 seems reasonable. I’ll attempt to send the receipt and make workers comp pay for it

Read the bad reviews on that, it is not something I would purchase.

Can I ask all of you who have gotten surgery: how did you choose a surgeon, and do you have any advice for me as I do the same?

My current doc is young and (I think) a bit inexperienced, though he told me he does 50-100 of these a year and works under Dr Sampson, a pioneer of the surgery. I’m going for a second opinion on Thursday with Alan Zhang at UCSF, who sounds like he does a lot more of them.

It’s just so hard to be objective about it! Can you all share your experiences with choosing?

I personally asked my PT who the best hip doctor was in his opinion. He is in a unique position in that he is only 35 years old but has had both hips replaced due to a congenital issue plus all the hip patients he treats. Older doctors aren’t necessarily better as they may not be as adept at the latest technology but 50-100 per year doesn’t sound like a lot to me. Seems to me that most ortho practices tend to have specialists. So and so is the knee guy, so and so is the hip guy etc. Look for one of those.

Thanks Laurie! Agreed.

It has 4 1/2 stars, which isn’t really that bad. I just glanced at the reviews, but some of it seemed user error or a defective machine, which happens from time to time.

Nice to see this thread has had a life of its own in my absence!

FWIW, Tollertwins, I’ve been wearing Altra Zero-Drop shoes when I’m out of the saddle and they’ve been great. I got a really hideous hot pink pair on clearance for $30 to try them out, and they gave me enough relief to take the plunge and buy a more subdued pair. Doesn’t help with the riding boot situation, but the extra padding and neutral footbed (vs. most shoes’ downward slant from heel to toe) have made walking/hiking much more comfortable. I change into my riding boots just before I ride, and take them off as soon as my horse is untacked, as I find walking in dress boots causes hip pain. I wear sneakers at the barn, but unfortunately all of the Altra models I’ve seen have a lot of mesh and would allow too much sand/dirt/bedding/hay chaff in if I wore them through my usual barn routine.

My apologizes if this has been discussed but has anyone found a doctor using pentosan on hips? I found one article but I assume it would be considered off label?

I can’t see your article but I do remember we discussed that here somewhere. It was more in terms of people self medicating as opposed to being given it by a doctor however. The injections burned but were said to bring relief I think. If I remember correctly it is only being used for bladder cystitis in humans at the time being.

I LOOOVVVEEE Altras! I have the intuition ‘everyday’ for most of the time, and the mesh ones for workouts.

I have been considering the ‘walking’ style for not-riding wear at the barn, since they dont have any mesh. However, our arenas are coarse sand and I’m afraid they’ll die pretty quickly.

I finally got back in to my doc, and he injected the piraformus. The block hasn’t quite worn off all the way, but it feels pretty good so far, so we’ll see how that goes. Pretty “easy” injection of just block and some stabbing of the muscle, so perhaps something for all of you that are still sore after surgery and recovery to consider. I don’t know if anyone ever really checked out my piraformus before but I did nearly hit the ceiling when the doc jabbed his thumbs into the right spot. Whoa.

Also got two shoulder injections because I want to be just like Laurie and managed to trash my shoulder. Wooo. :sigh: Number of intact labrums now: one out of four. That left shoulder better behave.

Whatever you do, don’t stop using that shoulder, even a little bit. Learned that one the hard way. Injecting the piraforumus really helped me but I had to have the ishial bursa injected as well to finally get me over the hump.

As long as I’m on pain meds it’s pretty easy to keep using the shoulder. I wake up in pain a few times a night, and have pain the end end of the range, and certain things like taking off my shirt or bra are hard, but I’m otherwise really okay. The doc did do some tests today to check stability and those were really shockingly no fun–I did NOT expect that pain or that weird hello where is my shoulder joint feeling!–but my range of motion is okay and not too terribly painful. Of course, once those pain meds run out, all bets are off. He initially didn’t want to inject before a surgeon saw me, but was willing to once I shared that no way no how can I do surgery until sometime after the move east. Just not gonna happen.

How long did it take your piraforumus to feel better after the injection? Did you get any steroid there or just lido? I felt okay on the block but it’s really not happy now. Ow :frowning:
