Joining the hip pain club

I don’t know what that is! There are so many weird little muscles and ligaments and nerves in there, but holy hell is it always PISSED OFF. Recovering from surgery was 100% brutal, so I could totally believe that some piece of soft tissue tore in traction and has never healed properly. I remember talking to a teacher in the waiting room at the ortho’s office and her recovery was SO DIFFERENT than mine. Totally floored me.

Right now I definitely need a new mattress. Mine was once firm, but is now old and now has a few saggy spots. I keep telling myself I’ll get rid of it when I next move, and now it looks like that will be happening sometime in the next 2 to 10 months… But a memory foam mattress topper is something I can track down in the meantime.

I’ll be really curious what you find out in Dallas if you go!

The one I bought from Kohl’s isn’t sexy at all, and probably won’t last forever, but it IS fairly inexpensive (even not on sale) and has made a difference. (Although I swear this was like $40 when I looked at it yesterday, so watch the price and see if it will drop again?)

At least my pain level went down to just background noise in my hip but walking has been fun. The way I walk now is like having a peg leg and it wears me out faster trying to get around.

I would not wait this out too much longer, but get someone looking at it, see if they can find an answer.

Don’t want those problems to become chronic if they can be fixed.

This thing is a lifesaver and is on sale for $20 bucks through today. I am thinking about buying one to have as a spare.

So I’ve been wearing the Back on Track boxers on and off for awhile now. While I don’t feel any warmer in them or anything profoundly different, I do think they help. Didn’t think so at first–wore them pretty religiously for a couple weeks and didn’t notice a difference–but now when I skip them, I DO notice more pain. Might be something to try for others

I ordered medium and they come out of the package looking like something sized for a slim 10 year old. They DO stretch a lot, but I wish I’d gone up to large so the waist band would be a little looser. I’m an 8 in pants for reference. The tag is really unfortunately scratchy but it can be removed or (lazy man method of dealing ) I wear them inside out.

^^^^^ I got my BOT boxers last week and first day I tried them for 2 hrs. Had agonizing pain soothed to tolerable

comfort very quickly. Slept in them after a couple days, old pelvic injuries have been quiet for couple days.

they do work. they do soothe pain. they are worth trying. I bought XXL, am about 12 in shorts.

How are all the hippies doing this summer?

I got another round of PRP today in my “good” (non surgical but still badly torn) hip. Had this done about … 30 months ago with good results, but started getting sore again maybe around the end of last year. Finally got around to scheduling a repeat.

Last time I had this done (different doctor/protocol), it was one quick injection and the whole of the PRP was put into the joint capsule. This time, it took far longer and the doctor put the majority along the torn anterior/superior labrum itself and the remaining few ccs in the joint capsule. Two separate pokes, at least two redirects per poke. Not very comfortable.

Four hours later the ropivicaine has worn off and things are pretty sore. Tomorrow is probably going to suck. But hopefully this will provide another round of long term pain relief!!

You all should invest in a sacroiliac belt. I thought I had hip pain, but in my case, it turned out to be a sacroiliac injury that is helped enormously by a heated mattress pad and the belt.

Certainly can’t speak for the rest of our hippie collective, but it makes my pain quite a bit worse. How excellent such a simple solution works so well for you!

Hope this does the trick hip sister!

Thanks, Laurie!!! Me too. Last night and today have been pretty miserable so I hope it’s worth it. Worked well last time. Thank god for the game ready, though!

How have you been feeling since your latest surgery?

Hip feels perfect, piraformus is fired up some. I had it injected like many times before and something went wrong and caused instability and massive pain in my low back but that is finally gone. I am getting my piraformus dry needled now and that is helping a lot.

Fingers crossed that this new protocol is worth the extra initial pain, @Simkie! @Laurierace , so glad to hear the hip is feeling better and that you’re getting some piriformis relief!

I’m still in the same old holding pattern, though I’ve developed wicked sciatica and a pretty exquisite new back pain. Primary care suspects a herniated disc (are chronic hip issues jacking up my back now?). But after paying vet bills in the last year for two right dorsal displacements, peritonitis, multiple splint fractures and various and sundry minor issues I’m really hesitant to pay for an ortho visit that could start the ball rolling on another expensive health issue. At least not until I get to the beginning of the year so I can try to pay only one huge deductible in the process of sorting it out! On the bright side I have an understanding boss who lets me work from home now and then when I can’t bear the torture of my office chair.

Damn :frowning: You just can’t catch a break, x-halt! That sucks, I’m sorry. Does a good massage guy help at all?

Laurie, glad to hear the hip is happy! Bummer about the piraformus. Yay for dry needling!

This flare with the PRP is really crappy. I’d say nearly as bad as the pain after surgery. Really stunning and not what I expected. It REALLY hurts…bad enough I seriously considered the ER last night at two am :frowning: Hopefully this doesn’t last long.Thank god for the game ready.

Oh, @Simkie, I’m so sorry! I’ve had steroid joint flares - they are excruciating. I hope your flare settles down soon!

Well, I’ve had some more diagnostics since I last posted here. Joint injection: GREAT response. I was 90% after that, which was fantastic except for the fact that it confirmed that my pain was intra-articular. I had several weeks of PT and am continuing the exercises at home - the injection is wearing off, but I seem to have plateaued at “ok”. It does get sore, and I’m not able to run etc, but I am able to walk around fine and ride with some periodic ibuprofen.

My doctor ordered a regular MRI (not a MRA) which did not visualize a labral tear, but who knows. Based primarily on the x-rays, he things my labrum is calcified (from the impingement), and there may or may not be a tear too; he said he didn’t order a MRA since we know my labrum is abnormal so getting more detailed info from a MRA wouldn’t change any recommendations he’d make. I don’t know how I feel about that.

He thinks surgery would help me - he thinks the impingement is at least part of the problem and will continue to cause problems. There isn’t really a “fix” for calcified labrum, so he wasn’t super optimistic about that. Since I’m doing ok at the moment, I’m not pursuing surgery for now, though eventually I might - especially if I get to where I can’t ride again. I think I need a second opinion before I go that direction.

I should try a massage. When work and home life get crazy I tend to sacrifice self care first.

But, more importantly, @Simkie, that is absolutely terrible! I can understand why the new protocol would make the initial pain worse, but I’d have hoped the flare would have died down more quickly. Keep that ice going, keep us posted, and feel better!

Taking care of yourself is important @x-halt-salute!!! I see a massage guy every three weeks and it makes a huuuuuge difference. It’s not very relaxing…he really kind of beats me up. But I feel so much better. Started off seeing him weekly, and have stepped back as there’s been less so work on.

Things are slowly getting better here. Still hurts. Still can’t put on my socks. Still wish I’d keep that toilet seat riser I had for surgery  But slept through from midnight to four, which is an improvement. Baby steps.

@Risuena that is an odd explanation for not ordering an MRA, but if your MRI was in a 3 Tesla machine, there’s not a lot more an MRA would tell you. Tears can be seen with the stronger machine without the contrast. Glad you are doing “okay” at least but bummer your plateau isn’t better than that :frowning: A second opinion sounds like a good idea! You might consider PRP…despite my total miserable report, I have found it to really work pretty well. I got about two pain free years out of my first round!

My flare is still going. Slowly getting better. My flexors are SO tight and spasmy so the goal today is to stretch them. I can’t even lie flat in bed :frowning:

Well…I welcome myself to this elite club. I was a missed hip dysplasia baby(I’m in my 30’s), and have had 7-8 scopes to repair repeated injury and damage to my labrums. I’ve had detached labrums, tears, I had a FAI on both my left and right hip. I also had 3 Osteotomies to correct the joint angles(done twice on the left due to a non-union). I’m doing great as long as I keep riding actively. The second I stop riding even for a couple of weeks, everything starts hurting again.

Wow, that’s a rough initiation into the club!

I can’t believe you feel good when you ride actively. I’m so glad it’s the case, but my little head just can’t fathom that the saddle would be a happy place after all of that!
