JSwan-- Congratulations Master!

Yes, the huntsman stays with the hounds. Generally there is a lot of huffing and puffing and wondering if the sharp pain in the chest is a heart attack or just a stitch. What’s really fun - whether whipping in or hunting the hounds - is trying to climb wire fences.

These are not fat couch potato basset hounds. These are field bred. Many people would not recognize them as basset hounds, thinking they are a basset/beagle cross or other cross. They can sprint up to 30mph.

There are many days I wished I was on a horse. And I have developed a whole new appreciation for how hard our horses work on a hunting day.

I would not say I am in great shape. I could stand to lose a few pounds. I’ve got a lovely new horse in the barn and will be riding more this summer. That should help. That and staying away from anything that tastes good.

From your description of what’s involved, my guess is that these issues will be non-issues pretty soon. Congratulations!

Congratulations! I wouldn’t have known anything about bassets except for your postings. Very nice, indeed.

Fantastic news. Congratulations!

JS - Congratulations on becoming Joint Master!! I hope this means you’ll regale us with some great hunt reports come hunt’n season.

My son has two of the Ashland bassets he got from Mary last year - absolutely stunning French hounds that he adores. They were from the V litter - both picked up ribbons at Bryn Mawr as puppies - and now are pampered couch pillows, lap-snuggling pets, and outstanding walking/jogging companions. We doggie-sat them at our farm this past week and had a blast with them. They have an incredible endurance motor packed into those sleek compact bodies - and are soooooo sweet and easy going. They got along super well with our two rough collies, just making themselves at home the second they walked in the door. Beautiful and impeccably behaved guests. I love them!!

Since I’m retired from foxhunting I’m hoping to get out with a foot pack a few times this fall. Will have to keep my eye on the hunt website this fall/winter.

Congrats!

CONGRATULATIONS !!! ENJOY !!!

Congrats

Congrats JSwan! It’s all your fault that I have tried both fox hunting and hunting to the bassets. Thanks you so much for encouraging me to live my dreams!

Yay! Congratulations!

Congratulations Jess! And congratulations to Ashland Bassets for getting such a wonderful joint master.

Now that I’ve quit smoking, I’d love to take you up on your offer to follow the pack. When is y’all’s season over?

Congratulations and best wishes!!

Congratulations! Hopefully I’ll have my VA hunting holiday one of these years!

I add my congrats as well. That takes a lot of work. Nicely done!!

Congratulations JSwan! Just think it was just a few years ago you went hunting for the first time. How far you’ve come and how far you’ll go! Ashland Bassets are in very capable hands!
