Reading the other posts, you dont’ want a dressage boot but a dress boot. There’s a difference though some think that dress = dressage and that’s not always the case. Many riders use “dress” boots for dressage but not dressage boots for hunters or jumpers. As others have posted true dressage boots can have quite stiff shafts (better to nudge your horse into those Piaffes right lol) vs. the dress boots many of us wore hunting and showing. At some point field boots became the “It” boot and the norm. From my tack shop days I would get weary of customers telling me that they weren’t allowed to show in dress boots. Back in the day were show clothes more strictly followed fox hunt attire - brown and filed boots were only to be worn for cubbing and informal hunts while dress boots were acceptable to be worn any time.
So go purchase those coveted dress (not dressage) boots.

It is a curious American habit to purchase uncomfortable boots and suffer agonies to break them in. Buy boots that are comfortable from the start, particularly if you are going the custom route, then you can concentrate on things other than your feet falling off due to lack of blood!

Although, it’s funny because I bought uncomfortable field boots off-the-rack 15 years ago, but I’m French! :lol: They are a dream to wear now.

Dress boots were very popular when I left the H/J scene in Ontario in 2018. Dress boots though, not dressage boots. I prefer them over field boots
I personally wanted these Ego7s, but unlike a dressage boot they were incredibly fitted through the ankle. Enough that while the field boot in the same size and measurements fit me, I was unable to get it in the dress boot.
For all the people too young to know this… Dress boots are the more formal boot. Back in the day Everyone wore dress boots for everything EXCEPT ratcatcher days out hunting when you would wear your BROWN field boots. So to answer your question, dress boots plain black tall boots with no laces are the equivalent of wearing a skirt vs slacks. Yes, you can wear them in all phases. I had a pair of the “eventer” boots, with the front zipper that I wore for years (80’s -90"s), they seemed to have been a spin off of the old school polo boot. Zippers and gussets are actually relatively new to the scene.

i prefer my Sergio Grassie field boots (of course they cost a lot more but fit me like a glove and instantly broke in)…but I think it is really mostly about what fits. I go for comfort first.
