Nevertoolate each NC county now has a website which provides all of their contact information. For example, if she were in Dare County, you would just google “Dare County Clerk of Court.” If you just call the clerk of courts office for your respective county they can tell you exactly what to do. Generally it is as simple as calling or walking into the courthouse and telling the elected clerk your MIL’s situation. They may want to verify her age by drivers license or ask her to sign something. It is really not a hassle at all. We all have elderly parents so everyone understands!

In any case, I’m just bitter and jealous because I never get called for jury duty. Not that I’d pass voir dire. I’m a blond female PhD with a potty mouth, a deep love for Karl Marx and 1,000# furred types. I’m the peer of, like, 4 people.[/QUOTE]
Ok, gimme 2 more degrees and I’ll be one of the 4! Are you also a lanky giant?
The thread title reminded me of this news story from a couple years back: East Boston Cat Called to Jury Duty.
(This cat is probably more my peer than some residents of East Boston. :))
Jury duty was today, and MIL was fortunately able to be excused due to her age…and didn’t have to show the judge a note from her vet!
Glad to hear that! But I think presenting the vet’s letter would’ve shown she wasn’t mentally competent to serve.
I was excused from jury duty due to my farm/pets. I didn’t go in to the selection with the intent of “getting out of it” because I truly don’t mind jury duty.
The problem was that the case was involved enough that it could have gone overnight and since I’m the sole caregiver for my farm I couldn’t have done it.
I made it through all the selection processes but both attorneys excused me when I indicated the problem. Much better than finding out at five o’clock in the afternoon that I couldn’t go home and sat there fretting and not concentrating on the case.
