Just a trail ride

Today was a ‘gift’ of a day in terms of weather here in Virginia. No humidity, cool breezes, bright sunshine, everything rich, green, or in bloom.

While there were various scheduled rides and things to do horsey, I just didn’t want to be on the highways or trailering with the holiday weekend.
But I needed a horsey ‘escape’ from a LOT of things (OMG, don’t ask…)…and I left for the barn by 7:30. Of course barn owner had not even fed when I got there, I knew I’d arrived too early, but we chatted about it, and decided to take advantage of the weather, and the opportunity, and to plan a long ride out.

I did groom a lot while my guy was digesting ‘breakfast’ but he was one unhappy camper at not being turned out with his buds…he was like " Wait !!! I haven’t had one blade of grass yet!"

Since daughter has been home from college for awhile, he’s been arena schooled more often, by her in prep for showing this summer, and of course see’s me coming and then knows its ‘ride out’ for a few hours time.
So, poor guy, I guess he knew what was coming.

Both BO and I longed the two of them for a bit…ME because i wanted some transition work for my guy, as I knew most of our ride out would be walking…HER because her mare was showing a need to blow off some steam.

Then we were off …the trails were so BURSTING ‘green’…quiet and quite cool in the woods, the streams were full, showing a LOT of overflow run off silt, etc from the heavy heavy rains we have had here. The light lines had that kind of breeze you HOPE you can remember when its July here…just a fabulous ride.

We rode further on that particular trail/area than BO had ever gone before…we just ‘kept going’ as it was such a perfect day. I’d guess we rode a solid 2.5 hours? Anyway…steep light line hills for trotting…clay dirt farm roads and hay field circumferences, and wooded trails and creeks.

One tiny proud moment: I realized the last two times we’d ridden out together, that BO wanted to take/work a certain horse who had given some trouble (barely) that she wanted to take the time to work through. I am always happy to say ‘sure!..whatever!’ as my guy has certainly always had issues I wanted to deal with as well…Anyway, as I said, I quietly realized "Good GRIEF…its MY pony who is being the trail babysitter/‘good example’ (!!!):eek: (Trust me, you’d have to KNOW my ‘pony’)…
Anyway…he HAS been good. He HAS gained this QH breeder and owner’s respect in all his ‘crazyee ayrab’ moments.

I had a beautiful day at my barn, with my horse, and appreciative of my wonderful BO. On the way home, I noticed many many hayfields being cut and baled, and the honeysuckle was heavy in fragrance. Radio blasting I realized I was smiling.

I had that ‘horse time’ rescue from the stress and unhappiness I’d been trying to escape. Mission accomplished.

tons of fun

Fantastic!!!

I felt I was there with ya!

I too took my lil mare out for a jaunt this morning in a bit of a misting, spitting drizzle and only 62 degrees. ( high desert and usually too hot ) She was right on the bit and full of herself, so off we went at a “Long Trot”, jig-jig, hop and a snort. WOW! What a great time we had as it is sometimes so hot here we can only ride after 7 P.M., or before 7 a.m. this time of year. We rode over to the buttes, up and down thru the creosote brush and past the dirt bag dirt bikers trespassing on the wildlife refuge maybe 7 miles round trip . Back here to the home front and she was still ready to do it again. But stalls to muck out and goats, chickens, ECT. to feed, and stuff to do. ( BOO HOO… I wanted to continue also) Tommorrow…we go to the Saddleback Park and do at least ten and maybe 15 miles!

Steve… on the grey Arabian

Excellent!! I loved reading your post! What a fantastic ride you must have had. And boy do I hear ya about your horse finally being the babysitter. I was in that position today too on an endurance ride. I agreed to sponsor 3 juniors and my pony had to be the big girl. She had a few hairy moments but nothing bad and they were all my fault. It sure does your heart good to see them develop doesn’t it???

It was an absolutely idyllic day here in Virginia today, wasn’t it? So great that you were able to enjoy it and have a good ride with your pony! My hubby and I also went out on our first long ride of the season with a gaited group at Little Bennett in MD, and it was amazing. The horses were thrilled to be out, and with a group that could move out like they can. They did so well, and it gave me the chance to work with my boy Luke on his herd bound issues. I’m so proud of both of them.

Tomorrow is supposed to be just like today, and again on Monday – only a bit warmer. Get out and ride!

Steve: one of the neatest thing about this board is being able to share with someone across the country as if they were down the street! I’ve never been able to ride ‘out west’ but have always wanted to.

Av.T.: I doubt my guy will ever babysit for a real endurance ride youngster, but most likely because I’d never be able to complete one, not him! I’m really interested in learning more on the sport, but its the ‘racing’ aspect of it that will most likely leave us out…I certainly admire it, though.

jazz: where are you in VA? I’m just north of the Fredericksburg area…keep me posted of any additional rides? Thanks!!

Sounds great!

Love the idea of trails through the forest, and streams, and lots of blooming, green! I rode yesterday in the desert, and though none of the above, it was so beautiful. The temperature was perfect, not hot, big puffy clouds and you can see forever! WE jumped a herd of deer, and just had a wonderful ride. YEAH!!!

Ayrabz – I’m in western Loudoun. There are so many groups in our area (NVA/MD) organizing rides. You should join the Yahoo groups for the Nokesville Horse Society, Clifton Horse Society, USTR, Tri-State, Battelfield Equestrian Society, VA Trails, etc. etc. if you like group rides. Isn’t there a group down in your area too? Too bad you’re not closer to me. With a group, if you don’t have a trailer it’s easier to hitch rides – particularly now when folks are looking to cost-share gas. I think most of them allow you to join the Yahoo group without being a formal member, though some make you join if you ride with them.

Today is another great day! But we’re giving our guys a day rest, and then riding tomorrow.

Just got back from a lovely trail ride here on my own farm trails in SE CT,what a beautiful weekend!Rode my younger QH yesterday, who is still a bit of a trail greenie, but today I took my (mostly) retired mare out for a nice, quiet, walk only trail ride with my sister and her Arab.Heading out of the yard,we noticed for the first time Bluebirds are nesting in their box.Going up the hill and into the woods,we saw a small flock of Turkeys, with the proud Tom on full dislpay. That got a snort out of the girls…Once in the woods, about 10 minutes later,we saw a doe with twin fawns, they were adorable.Back out into the hayfields,an Osprey came circling overhead-there is one nesting in the cell phone tower right by our property. These are things you just don’t “see” when driving, cell phoning,Ipoding, text messaging.Hooray for good trail ridin’ horses-and beautiful weather!!

Jazz…thanks for the groups/info…I’ve applied for membership in the USTR one, and will look into the others. Most of em are farther north, but I have (or DID before the hideous gas prices!!!) hauled to the Battlefields, Graves Mtn. (which I found too rocky w/o shoes all around) etc.
Yes, I wish we were closer!! Do you ever do Lake Anna, or have you ever been on the Easternshore Trail Ride?

Sunnycher-my inlaws are in Vegas–while I’ve never gotten to ride there, I have always found the desert beautiful!

Spurgirl: ok, YOU win the Wild Kingdom trail ride for today:D Wow! What an array of gorgeous creatures all on one ride. So, with an osprey nesting so close I assume you’re near beaches as well? Do you ever get to ride there?

Wild Kingdom,indeed-just outside the door at the pond in my paddocks is a great Blue Heron, and 4 Canada Geese:lol:…Yes,I’m 10 minutes inland from the coast, right off 95…there are 2 parks I’ve ridden at that have nice beaches for quick little gallops. You can also ride on certain beaches in RI/CT off season, but I haven’t done it lately-and are closed off to riders now that Memorial Day is here (seasonal horse use only).I read you’re in VA,if you ever head north,PM me…stay here a few nights,we’ll ride!I have 2 open stalls;)

Spurgirl…I have LONG dreamed of a trip north, hauling to spots and overnighting at great horse/riding locations—I PROMISE if gas prices ever let up, OR if I hit the lottery, I’ll be PMing you right away! (how kind of you to offer, regardless!)

We haven’t done Lake Anna, but someone else here on COTH was talking about how nice the trails are. That and Graves are a bit too far for us this year with the gas prices – but I’d love to try Lake Anna some time.

I am glad to hear that so many people had wonderful rides this weekend. I went with a small group out to Cedarville State Forest in MD yesterday and had an amazing ride. Those of you who said the weather in our area was just gorgeous are dead on. It wasn’t too hot, but the sun was warm and inviting, and the smell of fresh honeysuckle blooms was in the air all around.

We were out for about 3 hours and all of the horses were great. My gelding and I had never been to this particular park before, so he was nervous of course, but he was so well behaved and he listened beautifully. Every time I go out with him, I am even more convinced that he was made just for me!

I am so glad that the summer is here…I really miss the long days when we head into fall and winter.

Like the OP, I needed that “horse time” escape, and I am sooo glad that I was able to get it yesterday in the form of a nearly perfect trail ride!

This was a great weekend for riding here in Va. The only day I didn’t get to ride was Sunday. I rode yesterday(Monday) with a group from riding club. We had set up some obstacles for a judged ride and wanted to do a trial run. We ended up with 25 riders. We had a blast trying the different obstacles. About 1/2 the ride was in the woods where it was nice and cool. The rest was around the paremeter of a large field. After we got back to the trailers, we had a picnic lunch. What could be better, great place to ride, great friends, and food on a beautiful day.

Two great rides here this weekend

 Rode Saturday and Monday, both great long rides with good friends, all mounted on terrific horses :D:D Weather was perfect, didn’t run into any trail hogs, a good time was had by all. Well, except by the group of Wild Turkeys we ran into, and scared the bejeezus out of !!

I’m so lucky to have access to trails right out of my backyard. With the price of hauling, I won’t be going far this year.

Simbalislm: what a great group it sounds like you have ! Where in VA?
Lawndart: i HEAR ya in re: the wild turkeys. While deer used to be my fret, once a gobbler flaps into flight in front of a horse, you reassign the fret !!!
I also hear ya in re: the opportunity for great ride outs straight FROM the barn vs. hauling. I’ve so enjoyed that opportunity since moving to this barn this winter. Now if gas would just SLOW DOWN in its increases…
