Just Used My Newer Spreader for the First Time

We love ours, it is going strong after ten years. My cousin built sides onto hers, which works well for her. We spread on our trails and in our orchard. Great idea to put lime and feet in it. I guess I need to spray it with WD 40!

Would the newer spreader work for stalls bedded in deep straw? Also, it sounds as though most of you spread fresh manure/bedding rather than composting it first. How is it that doesn’t spread worms and burn the pasture? I’m curious because I spend a lot of time composting ours and would love to learn about why I don’t have to…

It’s not going to work with straw - hay either. Sawdust, shavings, manure are all fine but hay is a big no go. If I have hay to get rid of I deal with it separately.

Yesterday was the first day I was not able to spread after mucking – below zero temperatures and 65 mph winds! So, that was the first time it sat in the barn with manure in it overnight. We mucked into this morning and I headed out to spread this afternoon … a little concerned that I had a big load and wondering if some of it might be frozen.

I’m happy to report that the Newer Spreader never missed a beat!

I really love this thing!

And no – it’s a no-go on the straw or even hay. I bed on pellets and, like stb, if there’s hay left over in the stall, I deal with it separately. But we do use HayChix hay nets and there is seldom any hay left over!
