Kaley has the money to back up her offer; she happens to be famous. Had I had the money, I would have made an offer for Shelley Browning’s Vorst D and I am a nobody. (I would bet she had lots of offers to purchase him.)
No.
I’m entitled to my opinion just like you’re entitled to yours. I gave my take, you don’t have to agree. Clutch your pearls all you want. Heaven forbid we have a conversation about race on CotH without everyone losing their ever loving marbles.
I’m going to regret posting this, but here goes…
If I’m understanding correctly, the subvert racism Equkelly is referring to is the implication that caretaking standards for horses are substandard in Japan, meaning that Saint Boy needs to be “rescued” from his big bad owners. I saw some comments on Facebook that essentially said "Poor Saint Boy is going to be eaten after he angered his owners like that!!! :’( " . THAT is overt racism right there.
The disconnect is that many posters are arguing that his owners ARE substandard due to issues that are not related to the owner’s ethnicity, such as allowing the horse to be ridden in a way that caused severe mental distress and the use of draw reins.
As with most things, I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. It does seem like a ploy to get attention, kind of like people that claim every OTTB they buy off the track is a “rescue”, or worse, people who pat themselves on the back every time they “rescue” a horse from a kill pen. Personally, if I had that much money and really wanted to make a difference, I would be putting the pressure on the UIPM to change their rules (which they seem to be doing). But I don’t doubt Kaley has a very kind heart and wants to make a difference.
For the record, if I had the money I would love to take Saint Boy too, but the beautiful grey Jhon stole my heart
This is 100% where I was coming from.
I can totally respect this take as well, I obviously have a different one but can see how someone gets here as well.
Agreed. I think everyone’s heart is in the right place at the end of the day I just think this is something that some people should be a little more aware of that’s all.
Still a KC fan FWIW, I loved the flight attendant.
In addition to having money and fame, she’s a serious horsewoman who competes in the jumpers. She’s not just some celebrity who thought, “Oh, that poor horsey-worsey. I should buy it.”
I was thinking about that horse recently watching a dressage lesson that featured some of the same caliber of riding. The name of the horse escaped me, though, so thanks!
I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect someone to delve into advocating for the reform of a sport that most of us are quite unfamiliar with out of the goodness of their heart.
Just look at how much many of us learned about Modern Pentathlon by contributing to the thread in the Tokyo Olympics forum; JER was able to answer many of our questions and explain why certain suggestions were less likely to be viable than others, but we only learned more about how best to improve the sport but spending a lot of time going through it.
Expecting a very busy woman who balances acting, producing and riding to become a subject matter expert on something that’s quite different from the show jumping she currently knows is not reasonable. Whatever you think of the way she continued to repost about her “name your price” offer, she’s fully entitled to offer to buy a horse for whatever reason she wants without being responsible for revamping a whole sport in which she does not participate, or for rescuing every other horse in the world that’s in a less-than-ideal situation.
And has the screws holding her leg together to prove it.
I get where you are coming from with this. (And @Equkelly as she’s said this is what she’s meant) Comments like that are racist in nature and simply immature. However, I wasn’t aware of the nationality of the owner and was just pissed that they’d allow things to continue. It was unacceptable. If Kaley is appealing to the owners via instagram (which is a publicity stunt) it wouldn’t appear that she would know either. Of course she may have contacted them but we don’t know that. In a recent IG post she indicated that she was “still waiting”. I guess one could assume they were Japanese but I don’t think that too many people know how the pentathlon works in terms of where the horses come from. If they say things like what equinelibrium is saying people are- that’s most certainly anti-asian and racist. I still think, though, this is just a case of an actor trying to get the accolades and publicity (which she got) but also wanting to help that particular horse. No idea why she wouldn’t also want to focus on or address the bigger issue. Maybe because it’s easier.
This has absolutely NOTHING to do with race(ism). Get a grip. Adding here. Have you seen her pull sick senior dogs from high kill shelters and either find them homes or keep them herself?? Give the woman a break.
She’s got more work offers than she could fulfill in her lifetime and is nominated for an Emmy for Flight Attendant. She hardly needs publicity. Did it occur to anyone that her best forum for bringing attention to a problem is her IG? The issue has been covered in many places as mentioned above, but with her millions of followers, and the media pickup she has gotten, she is bringing international attention to this problem in the way she can uniquely contribute the most eyeballs. Sure, she could have had her minions quietly negotiate a purchase but then how many fewer millions of people would know about the problem? I would posit that her volume of publicity is playing a part in any consideration the MP committee is giving to reform.
Oh absolutely she doesn’t need the publicity. I am aware of some of what she’s done and what she’s doing. I’m also sure she’s passionate about rescuing whether it be her dogs ( I believe she’s involved in pittie rescues?) or horses.
The issue I had with it was the reposting of accolades for offering to buy the horse. There was just something icky about that. Maybe some people don’t feel that way and that’s fine. For me there’s other things she could have posted on IG to raise awareness. I actually do like her and follow her (and Dumpy) on IG and I think she’s doing amazingly with the horses considering she has a high stress and demanding career.
I can certainly understand your impression, but I would guess that she has a social media manager who thinks celebrity media is all about number of posts, likes, etc. and doesn’t realize it isn’t such a great impression for horse folks. I know Kaley tangentially because she bought my former trainer’s ranch and my daughter helps her with her breeding program. I can absolutely say she is not a media princess. She rescues everything from horses to donkeys to dogs to rabbits. When her young horses came to my ranch for a young horse free jump clinic, she climbed down from the observation and walked all the way to the other end off the arena to thank the clinician and all the handlers. She may not have had the perfect strategy, but for sure it was not about her, it was about doing something to help the cause.
That’s good to hear. She does seem to be a very good person. You’re probably right about the social media manager.
On a side note I am jealous of all her bunnehs.
This is an excellent example of damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I highly doubt all the naysayers in this thread do what they apparently expect Kaley Cuoco to do. Do you ever share a rescue’s or friend’s post about a horse/dog/cat needing a home, or a fundraiser for it’s medical bills, or even adopt or donate yourself? If so, did you make sure to donate to all possible efforts in the whole world? Did you research all available animals in the entire world and adopt the one you felt was in the most dire situation?
It’s not KC’s job to start a movement about abuse and terrible riding in general, it’s all of our job to stop abuse when we see it, or call it out. She saw a situation and reacted on her emotions. As far as we know she is, in fact, human.
^ Very well said.
I didn’t say she was just some celebrity . The name is familiar when I think on it-- Isn’t she connected with the humane society too? I just thought with her background she could do something more if the sport bothered her so.
She does plenty for animals, don’t worry about her.
This is interesting because I live in a country where amateurs jump bigger. Heck, my 10 year old is jumping 95cm. We do have lower classes in our version of schooling shows and nobody is forced to move up each year. We have to qualify to move up levels by a) proving our proficiency through exams or b) proving our proficiency through placements in classes (not our classes are generally over 30 horses, often under 135cm they fill to 60 riders).
The idea of having your trainer ride your horse generally doesn’t cross anyone’s mind, you have to put the work in. The American’s trainer centered way of life baffles many people here. Here we have our lessons, but then we go to the shows that work for us, we ride the shows we want to and often warm up without anyone on the ground.
Maybe these people you are talking about live outside of Europe but of the countries I’m familiar with none of what you have said is true.
Well, she and her husband have split.
