About sponsors… I’ve sponsored perpetual trophies at large local shows -h/j and dressage- for years. In each case, the trophy purchase, yearly engraving of winners, trophy care and custody is at my expense. The horse show pays nothing. The names of past winners on the trophies include Olympic team riders and horses, up and coming young horses, some of whom went on to be very successful in international competition. The perpetual trophies are a show tradition, and chronicle each show’s history.
Here’s my experience:
Annual rated H/J show with USEF national championship: after sponsoring and providing a division perpetual trophy for four years, and never having the trophy listed in the prize list for the division it’s awarded, I told the awards coordinator that the sponsorship/trophy would be withdrawn. She promised the award would be listed in next year’s prize list, and it was. That lasted for 3-4 years. This year, no mention of the award in the prize list. Long time exhibitors in the division like the trophy, want it, and enjoy reading the names of past winners engraved on the sides. So I’ll call show management and ask if they want the trophy or not. (Why should a multi-year sponsor have to call and ask ??) Other perpetual trophies are listed, so it will be interesting to hear what they say.
Annual rated dressage show: Sponsored and provided a perpetual trophy for the GP freestyle class. Just prior to the awards presentation in the ring, with a large sell out crowd gathered for evening classes, the show manager directed me to stand just inside the ring with the trophy, and she would tell me when to walk out and present it to the winning rider. I waited for her cue. It never came. The riders were given their ribbons, rode their honor round, and left the ring. The manager apologized and said she had forgotten about the award. It’s funny now, but very awkward at the time. In the following years she asked if I would present the award. I declined and had her do it.
Annual rated dressage show: Sponsored and provided a perpetual trophy. Trophy is listed in prize list with other awards. Nice write up for each. Receive thank you note after the show. Each year, prior to show, management reaches out and asks if I would like to be a sponsor again. Answer: Yes !
Annual cash sponsorship of local dressage GMO: They are in touch each year, say thank you, and are a pleasure to support.
Shows would have more sponsorships if they would just ask. The key is not to ask exhibitors and owners …they pay enough through entry fees,
stabling, training fees, vet bills, farriers, etc.
Treat ALL sponsors well, regardless of the monetary value of what they paid and provided, and chances are they’ll renew their sponsorship each year, if asked. Although I’ve never received a free pass, special seating, VIP area access, etc. for being a sponsor, I still come back.
