Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Did you see Martin Fuchs on Friday? Or Henrik Von Erichman? If you are going the big stuff, and you want to win, you have to put yourself out there. They have to take big chances to win big money and they do it. From what I’ve seen the horses come back and are fine in future classes. These riders care for their horses better than most of us care for our kids IMO.
lol
I believe that Foxy had colic surgery Friday anyway- so they’re probably more upset about that.
Geneva had so much heartbreak from all of the greats. It was a very interesting few days of show jumping that’s for sure. King Edward stopped in 2 jump offs and United Touch had rails falling all over the place! Karl was not the only one who had an off day. The courses were big and technical so the pressure was on.
In the first round of the class yesterday 8 riders retired in the first round. In the jump-off King Edward and Catch Me Not stopped at the same fence, Lorenzo De Luca fell off, and Martin Fuchs crashed through a fence breaking a rail.
Funny side tangent but related.
Parents from a different discipline that buy and sell high dollar horses within that discipline were recently talking about how expensive high level, international GP horses were, as they are in the market. Something to the quote of “5 or 6 million and that’s not even the top horse!”
Bless your heart!
I feel like that could only be one possible set of parents. Lol.
Is Karl being criticized for buying a horse, or for being Karl?
No one blinked an eye when Springstein bought the London Olympic gold medal winner for Jessica at USD$8 million. I sense the latter, and smell sour grapes.
Am I the only one bothered that the caption is Carl, not Karl?
Raises hand. I feel you and wish op would fix it.
Done.
You did ask how much the horse cost, and unless it is disclosed by the new owner the price is private.
As for prices, they have always been what someone will pay.
An article in COTH from 2013. I will post the link and cut and paste the first paragraph.

The Swiss magazine Le Cavalier Romand reports that Jan Tops has bought Palloubet d’Halong, a 10-year-old Selle Francais gelding (Baloubet du Rouet—Indra Love, Muguet du Manoir) for the record sum of 11 million Euros, which translates to roughly $15 million U.S. dollars. Palloubet will be ridden by Tops’ wife, Autralian rider Edwina Tops-Alexander, who currently is ranked 14th in the Longines World Rankings.

“What someone will pay” has always been the going rate for a top horse since the beginning of horse sales.
There was a video posted on Facebook the other day about horse showing in England in the 1960s, and the prices for everything were hilariously quaint.

@bluemoon1231 seems to have a longstanding complaint about wealthy people in equestrian sport and has been critical of both up and coming, and upper level riders.
A few facts:
- Full results from Geneva here: https://www.chi-geneve.ch/results. For the rolex grand prix: those who retired typically had multiple fences in the first round so good horsemanship to save their horses. Lorenzo De Luca and Martin Fuchs had issues but in the jump off. That’s not the first time that King Edward has stopped unfortunately. It was an intense jump off.
- Caracole panicked in a very similar way to her last round in Versailles, which I saw in person. (So thank you but money isn’t a issue for me personally).
- I’ve never commented on Jessica Springsteen - and she’s actually a great rider. It’s a pity she isn’t doing more. Likewise Lillie Keenan could be a future olympian if has right horse power.
- I’ve posted very little previously. My comments were sport related - and not directed at anyone actually participating in this trail. But yet some of the replies were personally directed, (albeit at an alias). It’s kinda interesting how intimadatory (borderline bullying) some of those replies are for a non contentious topic; what was a rhetorical question; and some general observations. I’m wondering why…
Not my not my but I think it’s bc your comments seem consistently directed at one particular person and the written style comes off as contentious. One of the disadvantages of written communication is that nuances can be lost and that some styles get amplified.
Am I reading into this correctly that you don’t think Karl is a good enough rider to ride anything other than easy 1.45/1.5s? Wow. Even my trainer who never really talks about other riders thinks he’s a “hell of a rider.” We all have less-than-stellar rides on any given day.
This seems to be calling out Karl Cook by name:
Jessica is a great rider and has been for years. It was fun to watch her come up through the ponies and the EQ ranks to become an Olympic medalist (though it makes me feel old.)
I wouldn’t “pity” her not doing more if I were you. She’s doing quite a lot in International competition. Her FEI record shows that she’s competing 8 horses and has ridden in just over 140 FEI classes this year.
I think she spends a pretty good chunk of the year showing in Europe. So if you’re not following those results, it might seem like she’s not very busy.
