Mine were discouraged from coming in the barn with the big round fan I had going in the aisle. For whatever reason they don’t like that. Now it’s winter, no fan, and they’re already coming in and hanging out.
Gosh, I forgot to mention…they had a free choice feeder inside their coop. There was no grain (unless it fell out of some hay being put in the stalls) around the barn floors. The good stuff they wanted was outside in the pasture, after they filled up on corn/sunflower seed mix inside the coop. We had almost no flies, they did their job on every poop pile and the compost pile. They had plenty of shade in summer and shelter in winter. Their coop had lots of room on the roosts. If they got scared, or bad weather hit, they headed for the safe, comfy chicken coop. We had very happy chickens and they laid very good eggs. We miss them.

How do you do it?
My coop is near my barn because it makes feeding, watering and cleaning easy. However, my small flock of chickens poops on everything, and I don’t want them in the barn. Plastic owl? Barn cat?[/QUOTE]
Well so far I have found something to keep them out… I have a large air compressor that makes some noise. I created a slow leak in the line so that the compressor comes on every couple of hours… the ginnies and chickens are staying out for the time being. Guess they don’t like the noise.
