Kentucky Derby 2015
Any word on what the actual track conditions were. There were some reports that it was deep. Cuppy?
I’m not sure, but Jerry Bailey said that the track was getting slower throughout the day (so the time probably wasn’t as bad as it looks).

Is the Churchill Downs track known for being kinda funky or tiring? There are always several horses in the Derby that don’t get over the track very well.

Updates on the also rans?

I don’t know if I just missed it but usually the Blood-Horse has an update on Sunday on all the horses who ran in the Derby. Did anyone see that?

Upstart has been a favorite of mine, I saw that he was eased. Anyone know if he is ok?
Thanks!

There is this:

It’s not like the re-cap they used to do (I liked the “Derby they said it” articles) but it gives a good rundown on every horse.

Interesting. Victor Espinoza has been fined for excessive whip use riding the winner of the Santa Anita Oaks, causing a break in the skin. Apparently officials will also be re-reviewing his stretch ride of AP in the Derby, as his whip use got a lot of media attention. (Stewards said they didn’t notice anything amiss at the time they reviewed the race before making it official.)

Also, apparently CA has stricter whip use rules going into effect July 1.

i) $300? - absolute joke.
ii) they are now just fining him for an offence on Apr 4th? – even bigger joke.
OK, I finally dug up what happened to Upstart-nothing they can find. He was eased since nothing was happening and, according to trainer, no sense battling for third to last when the horse obviously was not even going to try.

Poked, prodded and scoped. Couldn’t find a thing wrong other then dirt in the trachea which, I take it, is not unusual? Leaving them to ponder the inscrutability of training horses. Taken with the DQ in Fl, this one doesn’t seem to have any luck.

Materiality came back with three shoes, might have pulled it leaving the gate.

Firing Line might have something to say as well as Frosted if they get to Belmont.

Thank you for this!
My computer crashed the morning of The Derby. Then my NYRA account wouldn’t let me bet - evidently my phone password is different from my online one…
TG we all got together at my sister’s, and she had enough in her TwinSpires account so that I could still lose.:wink:

But I’ve been wondering all week about Upstart. So very glad to know there’s nothing obviously wrong with him at this point.

AP was very impressive. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a repeat in The Preakness. But The Belmont is another story.

Agree, Frosted and Materiality were still running well at the end. What a run for Materiality w/ the shoe and the start. And glad for McLoughlin that Frosted finished up so well and is a strong contender for future races.

Looks like the 3yo picture will continue to be interesting this year!
