Kidney disease dog. Looking for thoughts

I’m starting to give up a bit. My fridge is a graveyard of cans, jars, and tupperwares of foods that have been rejected. Last night she was interested in the chicken katsu my husband made, so I pulled off the breading and she ate some of that after not touching other offerings. This morning, she won’t eat anything. I opened two new cans of dog food that she’s never had before and she won’t try them. She looks miserable. I can’t get the pepcid into her because she spits out whatever I try to pop into her mouth. I have a call in to the vet to get her opinion on what to do.

I’m so sorry, RJC. I would really consider it time. You’ve given it a good honest try, and her nausea is not controlled despite meds. Unfortunately, this is just how renal failure goes in my experience. :frowning: :frowning:

I’m really sorry. It’s such a horrible disease.

For whatever reason, today feels like a day of acceptance. I just need the vet to call back and agree that it’s time.

I’m so sorry. Jingles for a peaceful journey… making the decision is the hardest and most kind thing we can do.

Been there done that with my Mom’s cute little cocker spaniel. We never did determine what was really wrong with her. Kidneys, liver, cancer?
Mom was on a fixed income and I paid for some diagnostics but we just couldn’t find the answer.

The last month was intense of trying to find something she would eat. One day it would be chicken McNuggets, the next day baby food but seldom would she eat the same thing 2 days in a row. Initially the appetite stimulants helped but that didn’t last long. I gave her supplemental fluids too. When the poor baby went to secluded sleeping spots and the fact that she had dropped a ton of weight…it was time. It was tough but Mom understood. Sometimes we just can’t fix them :disappointed_relieved:.

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate it. She’s scheduled for Thursday afternoon now. The vet did suggest trying appetite stimulants (she said sometimes they help with nausea), fluids, and checking for a UTI (which I thought was random because nothing has changed in her drinking/urination habits for months) but ultimately, she agreed that the best case response would still just be delaying the inevitable.

Actually, my girl has had several UTIs since our renal saga began. However, even if your had one, treating it might be difficult if not impossible with her current stomach issues. Hugs to you for taking such good care of her. All dogs should be so blessed.

RJC I’m so sorry. You did right by her. I hope the journey is peaceful for both of you. Hugs

I’m so sorry :pensive:

(((Hugs)))

It was peaceful. She almost went from the sedative alone. She’s buried out in our prairie where she hunted mice and ground squirrels.

The next morning, we learned that my DH does have more cancer, but it is a straightforward surgery this time and prognosis is very good. We are all ok.

Thank you all for the help in making my good dog’s last days as comfortable as they could be, and giving me the information to try my best for her.

Bless you. It sounds like she was ready. Well wishes for your DH. You can focus on his recovery now knowing she’s at peace.
